The U.S Chamber of Commerce, Institute for Legal Reform, National Chamber Litigation Center, Labor, Immigration, and Employee Benefits, and the National Chamber Foundation are hosting two events on Wednesday, July 30, 2008. Please see below for event and registration details. 
An overlapping lunch will separate the events from 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm.



Drowning in Documents? The Role of the Discovery Process in the Information Age
(Discovery Session: 8:30 am - 1:30 pm)
The discovery costs associated with litigation in the United States courts have grown exponentially in recent years, with costs in large-scale litigation – particularly in the age of e-discovery – easily running into the tens of millions of dollars. This event will explore the implications of the explosion in the discovery process and the impact it is having on fairness and efficiency in the civil justice system. Release of new research examining these trends will highlight the importance of examining potential reforms in the discovery arena. In addition, panelists will reveal top strategies in managing discovery and potential legislative and rule-based solutions to bring sanity back to the process. 

Speakers will include:

  • John P. Frantz, Vice President and Associate General Counsel of Litigation, Verizon Communications Inc
  • Hilary Lane, Vice President and Senior Counsel, NBC Universal
  • Aaron Brown, Program Director, Discovery, IBM Information Management Software

Lunch will be served from 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm for both the Discovery and Employment events.

Laboring for a Lawsuit? The Growth in Employment Litigation and What it Means for American Business
(Employment Session: 1:30 pm - 5:00 pm)  *Following the noon luncheon.

This event will examine the increasingly complex employment litigation faced by U.S. employers as they strive to comply with an alphabet soup of statutes and regulations. Panelists will examine the implications for business of developments in wage and hour-related litigation as well as recent Supreme Court jurisprudence.  Capping off the event will be a panel of experts from Capitol Hill to provide insights on policy changes coming down the pike. 

Speakers will include:

  • Deborah P. Kelly, Partner, Dickstein Shapiro LLP
  • Camille A. Olson, Partner, Seyfarth Shaw LLP

Registration for this event opens at 11:30 am. The session will start after lunch at 1:30 pm. There will be a networking cocktail reception at 4:10 pm.
