•Background and Goals•

The 2008 Nonprofit Summit is the ninth annual gathering of nonprofit professionals in southwestern Pennsylvania.  The 2008 Summit is designed to:

  • Contribute to the effectiveness of individual nonprofit leaders
  • Help to build the capacity of nonprofit organizations
  • Build the collective strength and identity of the region's nonprofit sector

Changes in civic engagement - especially declines - have profound consequences for nonprofit agencies:  Americans' willingness to extend themselves into the community has an impact on nonprofits' effectiveness and their operations in areas as diverse as volunteer recruitment, building goodwill, donor development and board leadership.  Exploring social capital embraces everything from building social networks online and using shared online workspaces, to how nonprofits can promote increased voter engagement, to thinking about how the region could re-frame its aging population as an asset rather than a liability.  Accordingly, this year's summit will focus on how social capital functions in the nonprofit sector and how it can be deployed and successfully utilized to build stronger communities.
