In order to give participants a significant amount of time in the Master Class, we have decided to limit the number of active participants. The Master Class will have two tiers of attendees, Illustrators who will be assigned homework and who will have their work discussed in class, and Observers who will not be assigned homework and who will not show work in class. Both Illustrators and Observers will participate in the morning class, both can bring a dummy to the afternoon class if they have one, and both will be eligible to sign up for the private one-on-one portfolio critiques.

Master Class in Picture Book Visual Narrative
Your Master Class will be taught by either Laurent Linn, Art Director, Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, or Pat Cummings, award winning illustrator and teacher at Parsons and Pratt.
Illustrators will be given an assignment in advance that will take a few weeks to complete. They will be asked to bring this work to the Master Class. There the group leader along with the group itself will constructively critique the Illustrators’ sketches and final art to explore the process of creating picture book art. Our goal is for both Illustrators and Observers to leave with an understanding of how to evaluate and improve their work, and for Illustrators to take home a great new portfolio piece!

The One Two Three of Creating a Successful Dummy
This class will be taught by Monica Wellington, illustrator and teacher at the School of Visual Arts.
Participants will go through the important steps of creating a successful dummy. They should bring a dummy they are working on, a book they love, and their images from the morning session. The class will look at as many dummies as time allows, selected by lottery.
2.30pm – 5.30pm, One-on-one Portfolio critiques, $55 additional ($65 for non members)
Participants may sign up for one 15 minute critique with either an art director or an agent.
5.00pm-5.30pm
Coffee, cookies and schmoozing.
This will be a chance to network and get to know fellow illustrators, and also to share feedback.
Materials to bring: sketchbook, notepad, pencil, eraser, homework if required.
Please note that critiquers and Master Class teachers will be assigned at random. We have very few spaces, so please do not sign up unless you are willing to work with any teacher or critiquer.
