This year's Biodegradable Plastic Packaging conference (17-18 June 2008 at the Dorint Praha Don Giovanni Hotel in Prague, Czech Republic) proved another great success! Bringing together industry leaders from across Europe and the world, this event provided a valuable platform for industry to discuss this hot topic and map a route forward through the bio minefield.
Conference report

Thank you to all who attended the annual bioplastics event in Prague this year and from my perspective all went well. We managed to fit in heated debate, offers of free testing (there you go Michael, in writing now!), even Kafka and importantly a clarification and widespread acceptance of the major barriers to the adoption of (bio)degradable materials (I think this is the safest terminology). The Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) 2008 Local Authority Plastics Collection Survey 2008 makes interesting reading for anyone with a stake in the bioplastics sector. It reads thus:
"Plastic products made from 'bioplastics' are emerging internationally. From carrier bags and chocolate boxes, from fruit trays to water bottles, from mobile phones to CDs, there is an alternative made from biopolymers."
