Making Your Classroom Safe for LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning) Youth

Making Your Classroom Safe for LGBTQ Youth
All Students deserve a safe and supportive place to learn including those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or questioning (LGBTQ) their identity.  Studies continue to show that LGBTQ youth are at higher risk than their peers for bullying, homelessness, and increased suicide risk due to isolation and discrimination in schools and communities.

Specific topics to be covered include LGBTQ terminology, statistics, research-based interventions/supports, and an indepth discussion on hate and the movement for social justice.  Through the use of online activities, readings, videos, and discussions this course will leave participants better prepared to meet the needs for these youth and LGBTQ families.

This course is an introductory course to issues impacting LGBTQ youth.

This course is being offered for One Hour Graduate Credit, Iowa Relicensure Credit,  15 hours of Iowa Social Work CEU Credit and one may Audit the course.

Course Objectives

As a result of successfully completing this course, participants will:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of how to create safer learning environments and communities for LGBTQ students
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of basic LGBTQ issues including school climate, history, coming out process, and supports

This course is being offered in two different formats, but both provide the same information.  You can take this class as a three week long online course with instructional support for those who have never taken an online course before.  This three week long class will take a closer look at issues impacting LGBTQ youth through articles, activities, readings, and online discussions.

The in person class offerings will cover identical information, but will take place over the course of two days and you will have an instructor on site with you.  Lunch and all handouts will be provided for in person class participants.

Both formats meet the required fifteen hours of work for all license renewal classes and graduate credit courses for Iowa educators.

After registering, you will be sent an email before the start of class with information for logging into the online class or the address for the in person class site.
