American Indian Studies & Act 31

In 1989, the state of Wisconsin passed legislation requiring the instruction of Wisconsin American Indian history, culture, and tribal sovereignty of the eleven federally-recognized tribes and bands in the state, commonly referred to as Act 31. The legislation carries language requiring instruction at least twice in elementary grades and at least once in high school.

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and the Wisconsin Historical Society (WHS) are pleased to present this years’ Testimony and Primary Sources workshop.  Participants will hear testimony from Judge David Raasch, a retired judge from Stockbridge-Munsee Community Band of Mohican Indians. Mr. Raasch is currently a Tribal Court Specialist with the Fox Valley Technical College Criminal Justice Center for Innovation in Appleton, WI.

The day will continue with discussions on how to bring testimony into your classroom, the use of primary sources and artifacts with students, examination of special artifacts from the WHS archives, and information on the use of oral histories.

Every participant will receive a copy of the “Thinking Like a Historian” framework from the WHS, as well as a copy of “Native Nations of Wisconsin: Sharing their History, Culture, and Traditions” from the DC Everest School District Oral History Program.
