Map and Directions

UC Berkeley's Project Production Systems Laboratory (P2SL), the Lean Construction Institute (LCI), and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) are co-hosting the Lean Design Forum, which meets twice a year (in Berkeley early in the year and in the Midwest in the middle of the year).

The forthcoming 1.5-day meeting on Thursday and Friday, January 31 & February 1, 2013, will take place at the Hs Lordships Restaurant on the Berkeley Marina.

AIA members can earn continuing education credit for this event.

The Forum will focus on:
  • 'Lean' in Design
  • Maximizing Value / Decision Making in Design
  • and Case Studies

As of 1/17/13 the agenda (with some changes still possible) includes:

THURSDAY JANUARY 31

7:30
Breakfast
8:00 Welcome Introductions
8:30 Opening Provocation Session 1 | 60min

Will Loftis, JLL | Words and Things: an investigation

This provocation will be a wide-ranging investigation into the relation between rhetoric and design, intended to stir thought and discussion and to provide a philosophic lens for the presentations to follow which will showcase tools and methods used to create and measure value during design.
9:30
Break
10:00 Maximizing Value: Decision Making in Design Session 2 | 60min

Greg Howell, LCI | Organizational Structure and Cooperation: Decision Making in Design

The presentation proposes new ways to understand the organization and governance of Lean/IPD projects. The nature and function of organizations and the influence on behavior of a sense of fairness over economic interest is offered to support a new ways to understand and improve the delivery of value. Participants will be invited to join a research initiative to explore if and how these ideas advance understanding and practice.
11:00 Aligning expectations with outcomes Session 3 | 60min

Paz Arroyo, UC Berkeley PhD Student | CBA evaluation of design alternatives with sustainability criteria:

Stakeholders in the AEC industry need to select a method for their decision-making process. As Jim Suhr states “Among the most important of all the decisions the world's people will ever make are their decisions about how to make decisions”. This presentation shows that the distinctions between methods matter; we will compare some of them including Choosing By Advantages (CBA) and Value-Based methods.
12:00
Lunch
13:00
Session 4 | 60min

David Mar, Tipping Mar; Laura Lesniewski, BNIM; Markku Allison, Scan | Maximizing Value

Decision Making and Feedback Loops in Design: This sessions explores different modalities of design thinking (scientific, intuitive and experiential), how interaction between designers and stakeholders enhance alignment, and how feedback loops help inform intuition over time.
14:00
Session 5 | 60min

Ash Notaney, projectfrog | Buildings as Products

This session explores how Project Frog designs buildings as repeatable products and the resulting differences in process and ability to apply Lean methods.

Break
15:30 Case Study #1 Session 6 | 60min
15:45
Rick del Monte, Beck | IPD, BIM and Lean, a Case Study

This is a case study of a recently completed hospital project in Texas. The project implemented the AIA multiparty agreement and used Lean and BIM processes to inform decision making processes. We will examine the value impact of each of these processes on the financial and overall project success for the owner, architect, and contractor.
16:30 Case Study #2 Session 7 | 60min
16:45
Will Lichtig, Boldt, & Bernita Beikmann, HKS | Akron Children’s Hospital

Lessons in Complicated Connections: Strict budget constraints, a high standard of process improvement, and growth concerns led Akron Children’ Hospital to look to a new method of design and construction of a new tower addition. Participants in this course will learn about rapid workshop 3-P events, "Big Room" facilitation for an aggressive target cost, and how to connect multiple large teams for a common purpose of delivering high value to a customer.
17:30 + / ∆ for the day Open discussion (room closes at 18:00)

FRIDAY FEBRUARY 1
7:30
Breakfast
8:00 Measuring Value Session 8 | 60min
8:15 Did we get there? Bill Whipple, HGA | Post-Occupancy Evaluation of Distributed Supplies

A Path Towards Data Driven Design: A wide body of projects with distributed nursing supply solutions will be presented.  This design strategy seeks to reduce significant transport and motion waste in the healthcare setting.  Through various post occupancy studies the audience will be exposed statistically significant design elements.  Customers will learn how post occupancy data gathering and distributed supply strategies can apply to other repetitive tasks in building.
9:00
Session 9 | 60min
9:15
Stan Chiu, HOK | Value in Design: Understanding, Defining and Testing Value in the Design Process

VALiD is a 3 stage, 27 step system designed to align project characteristics customer value from design through implementation and operation.  The objective of the course is to communicate the system and its tools.
10:00
Break
10:30
Session 10 | 60min
10:45
Heather Chung & Simon Bruce, Smith Group | Measuring Flexibility

This session will explore tools used in scenario planning, where the goal is to quantify the relative value of options for evaluation.  Material will also foster discussion about how the AEC industry must learn to assign a value/measure to Flexibility (long and short term).
11:30
Session 11 | 60min
11:45
Todd Henderson, Boulder Associates | Measuring Quality

This session will illuminate some ways that a group of data-loving architects are improving the quality of their teams’ work by measuring & evaluating key performance metrics.
12:30 Directions for the Design Forum & + / ∆ Open discussion

Warm buffet lunch is included for those who wish to stay (room closes at 14:30)
