Never before has there been such opportunity for children who are born deaf or hard of hearing to learn to listen and talk. Everything we thought we knew about childhood deafness is changing because of newborn hearing screening, medical advances, cochlear implants and Auditory-Verbal Therapy. The possibilities for children who are deaf or hard of hearing to develop exceptional conversational abilities, literacy skills, and academic competencies equal to normal hearing peers are incredible today.

We will discuss variations in surgical technique, the importance of preservation of delicate cochlear structures and their effect on patient performance and outcomes. Trends in cochlear implant candidacy, including bilateral cochlear implantation and new generation cochlear implant technology will be explored. Participants will have the opportunity for hands on troubleshooting practice of cochlear implant technology.
