The Institute on Global Service-Learning offers faculty, administrators and practitioners a unique opportunity to learn about global service-learning pedagogy, theory, program models, institutional support and scholarship. The Institute seeks to foster greater collaboration and dialogue among participants who are interested in advancing global service-learning theory and practice. 

Registration is limited to 80 participants.   Institutional teams are encouraged.

This year, the Institute is organized into 3 modules. Participants choose one module in order to explore and dialogue on the topics in depth.

  1. Pedagogy, Program Models, Tools and Design (Richard Kiely, Cornell University)

This module will provide a basic understanding on the field of global service learning, the nuts and bolts components in designing and implementing the global service-learning program. 

    • What is global service learning?
    • What are the components of global service learning?
    • How to design and implement the program on your campus
    • Why global service learning? 

 

  1. Institutional and International Community Development (Rebecca Hovey, School Of International Training, Kate O’Donnell, Hartwick College and Alicia Swords, Ithaca College)

This module will provide a general overview of what is community development in international context.  The Facilitators will provide models, strategies and best practices for creating international program based on community partnerships. 

 

  1. Scholarship of engagement, Community-Based Research and Global Service Learning (TBA)

This module will provide participants an introduction to Community Based Research.  It then will follow with a session on how to train students to be positive and effective community researchers using a case study.  Finally, the session is devoted to faculty members on how to conduct research in the context of global service learning.
