University of Maryland ESSIC Center to Host March 24 MD-AEP Environmental Leadership Series
Tuesday, March 24, 2009 7:00 AM - 10:00 AM (Eastern Time)
ESSIC at M-Square Research Park 5825 University Research Court (directions below) http://essic.umd.edu/admin/direct/car.html College Park, Maryland 20740-3823 USA
The Maryland-Asia Environmental Partnership (MD-AEP) is pleased to announce its third Environmental Leadership Series Forum on March 24th, featuring Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center, or ESSIC. As governments and corporations search for new ways to plan for the impact of climate change, the University of Maryland’s ESSIC Center provides scientists and decision makers with the critical observational data and predictive tools needed to help adapt to future climate change. Such predictability will help save lives and provide governments and the opportunity to plan for future contingencies related to a changing climate
The Chinese Academy of Science has signed an MOU with the University of Maryland, recognizing the importance of the university’s climate research led by ESSIC. China is experiencing the impact of climate change first hand as weather extremes, record droughts and desertification continue to wreak havoc on the Northern Plains of China. Within the University of Maryland, ESSIC scientists have developed methodologies to cut across the traditional disciplinary boundaries of meteorology, oceanography, geology and geography in providing more of a holistic assessment of what lies ahead and seeks to better understand how the land, the oceans and the atmosphere react with, and influence, one another. ESSIC’s reputation for scientific excellence has been recognized globally.
Don't miss this opportunity to join key environment, space and defence industry, government and science experts at this the ESSIC Center at The University of Maryland’s Research Park at M Square. ESSIC is uniquely positioned to integrate information from earth systems forecasts by
- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA);
- The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center to predict how global change will impact the Chesapeake Bay area; and
- The Joint Global Change Research Institute, a collaboration between the U.S. Department of Energy and the University of Maryland.
With ESSIC being surrounded by DOE, NOAA and NASA Earth science efforts at the M Square campus, Maryland’s global leadership on climate change is firmly cemented. M Square is a 128-acre research park adjacent to the University of Maryland. It offers partnerships with the university, and proximity to federal agencies and major laboratories. When completed, M Square will be the largest research park in the region.
