Please scroll down to the Adjudicator Section to learn more about our esteemed panel of adjudicators.

Potential registrants,

Please note the change in the The North Central In-Region priority date.  In-region priority will expire on November 15, 2009 instead of December 1, 2009.

WELCOME!

Dear Participants,

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Department of Theatre & Dance is proud to host the 2010 North Central Regional ACDFA Conference, Dancing From All Sides.  Join us from March 17-21 as we explore the ways we create, view, think and write about dance.

Our theme this year, Dancing From All Sides, represents the depth and range of experiences we hope to offer at the conference.  For students and faculty alike, we are planning an array of master classes in a variety of techniques, lectures and panel discussions on topics including viewing and writing about dance, sound and lighting design, and dance making for the camera.  There will be special screenings of camera dances and documentaries, classes in choreography, and of course, plenty of live dance!

This year’s conference expects four full adjudication concerts, an informal concert of student works, and the Gala Concert where dances will be selected for participation in the National ACDFA Conference in Washington, DC.  We are committed to furthering and showcasing faculty research and the special events at our conference will feature a Faculty Concert and a Student/Faculty Dance for Camera Screening.  Look soon for more information about submission procedures for both of these events.

We anticipate an enthusiastic response to our conference and encourage you to register early.  Registration will begin October 15, 2009.  Our conference capacity is 400 participants.  Registration priority will be given to in-region schools through November 15, 2009.  We will register participants on a first paid - first accepted basis.  Check and credit card payments will be accepted.  You need not be an ACDFA member to attend the conference; however, if you have not yet joined ACDFA, we urge you to do so if you wish to participate in the adjudication process and to help further the important work ACDFA does for college and university dance programs.

ACDFA values diversity and UWSP’s Dance Program maintains this commitment to  developing a conference which reflects and gives value to the various forms, styles, cultural traditions and aesthetic dimensions of dance.  We would like to encourage all participants to embrace the spirit of our conference and explore dance from all sides, whether you are performing, creating, watching, writing, or thinking.  We believe active engagement provides the greatest potential for deepening the understanding of our physical and intellectual selves, regardless of level of dance experience.

A great deal of initial planning for the North Central Regional Conference has already occurred. We now need to know how many colleges plan to participate and which ones wish to have dances adjudicated for the Gala Concert. If you would like to participate, please complete the online registration process beginning on October 15, 2009.  The early deadline to receive the $115 registration rate is December 15, 2009, although registration may close before that date.  Registration costs after December 15, 2009 increase to $135 if slots remain.  The North Central Regional Conference generally fills very quickly and we want to reiterate the importance of early registration to ensure conference participation.  If you are interested in the adjudication process, please scroll down to the Adjudication Information & Policies section of our website.  Time and space will limit the number of pieces we can adjudicate.  Pieces will be accepted for adjudication, like registration, on a first paid - first accepted basis.  Please remember you must be an institutional member in good standing of ACDFA in order to qualify for adjudication.

For those of you who will be visiting Stevens Point for the first time, the university is centrally located with hotels and restaurants within walking distance of all conference activities.  We are excited to share the state-of-the-art facilities available and state-of-the-art thinking happening at UWSP.

We look forward to hearing from you.  Please send all questions to NorthCentralACDFA@uwsp.edu or call 715-346-2500.

    Sincerely,
    Michael Estanich

ADJUDICATION INFORMATION & POLICIES
All institutional members are invited to bring up to two dances for adjudication. Please read the adjudication policies below carefully. If you are not an institutional member and would like to participate in the adjudication process, you may join by filling out a membership application available on the ACDFA website.

You will be able to indicate whether you are bringing one or two dances in the "Adjudication Fees" section on online registration.

Adjudication Policies For Participating Schools

  1. Only ACDFA INSTITUTIONAL MEMBERS in good standing are eligible adjudication. Membership dues are payable to ACDFA and sent to the Executive Director.  See current Membership Information on the ACDFA website (www.acdfa.org) or contact the ACDFA National Office at 301-670-2820 or acdfa@verizon.net
  2. The ACDFA has established regions for purposes of organization only. Members are not restricted to participation exclusively or solely in their own geographic area. International members are always considered out of region.  All members may participate in one or more regional conferences each year.
  3. No more than two pieces from any institution may be adjudicated in a conference year.  Once a work has been adjudicated, it cannot be submitted for adjudication at any other conference during the same conference year.  Adjudicated works that are not accepted for the Gala Concert in one conference year may be reworked for  adjudication in subsequent conference years.  However, once a work has been accepted for a Gala Concert performance, it may not be resubmitted for adjudication by the same institution.
  4. A work presented for adjudication may be choreographed in any idiom by a student, faculty member, or professional; however only students may perform.  Performers include anyone seen by the audience.
    • A student is one who is officially declared by the represented institution as meeting one of the following criteria during the academic year in which the work is adjudicated:  (1) degree, diploma, or certificate-seeking candidate, full or part-time, or (2) if not degree, diploma, or certificate-seeking candidate, having equivalent focus and track of study as determined by the institution (example:  students from community or junior college programs).
    • If an individual had student status in the semester prior to a conference, that person may be considered a student at the conference.
    • A high school student may perform in an adjudication concert if s/he is registered and paying for college classes and is considered by an institution to be participating in its program.
  5. The maximum time for each work presented for adjudication is 12 minutes. The burden of meeting the time requirement rests with the choreographer.  ACDFA recommends that the choreographer allow a time margin within the 12-minute limit for technical errors or theater peculiarities.  The dance will be judged to begin when  any one of the perceived elements of choreographic choice (lights, sound, movement) is visible or audible to the audience. This includes the rising of the curtain on a pre-lit stage.  The dance ends when all perceived elements of choreographic choice have been diminished (no lights, no sound, no movement). Bows are not included in the 12 minute time limit unless they are required as part of the dance by the choreographer. If a dance goes over 12 minutes, it is ineligible for the gala and consequently ineligible for the National Festival.
  6. If two works are submitted, at least one must be choreographed by a student. An adjudication fee will be charged for each piece.
  7. It is the responsibility of each school to obtain and secure all appropriate and  necessary licenses and permissions prior to bringing any choreography to regional and national festivals for performance.
  8. If a work is unable to be performed in the Gala Concert, notification must be given to the Conference Coordinator prior to the Gala selection.  Institutions that are not available for participation in the gala may receive adjudication feedback but are not eligible for consideration for gala selection.
  9. If an institution chooses to bring a work choreographed by a conference adjudicator, that work will be adjudicated only for performance and not considered for the gala concert.  All adjudicators will be informed in advance of this information.
  10. A faculty member or other chaperone from the participating institution must accompany the students.
  11. No attempt is made either during the adjudication process or in the selection of works for the adjudicated concert to classify or equate college dance programs. All works presented for adjudication will be evaluated in terms of Performance and Choreography.
  12. Conference participants (faculty and students) should not attempt to engage  adjudicators in any conversation pertaining to conference participants, choreography or attending institutions.  Questions concerning the adjudication should be directed to the Conference Coordinator or other ACDFA Representative.
  13. An audio tape or CD of concert quality will be provided by the choreographer for the adjudication in the format specified by the Conference Coordinator.
  14. All conference participants must be prepared to work within the technological capabilities and all other limitations stated by the host institution.
  15. Students performing in the adjudicated concert must be officially registered at the conference and are expected to participate fully in conference events.
  16. A registration fee must be paid for each conference participant with the exception of  Board members and host institution students and faculty working at the conference.
  17. Cast replacements for works accepted for the Gala Concert must be approved by the adjudicators.
  18. Regarding video/technology in adjudication, pieces being adjudicated must contain a live dance performance element.

INFORMAL CONCERT INFORMATION
