For centuries, innovation and creativity have been major drivers of economic growth.  They have allowed America to flourish in good times, and helped pull us out of difficult ones.  Indeed, during previous recessions, America relied on the power of our ideas to help reignite the economy and spur the job creation that put us back on the path to prosperity.

Today, the story remains strikingly similar.  In laboratories, studios research hubs, and even home workrooms, across the country, entrepreneurs and innovators are hard at work turning their ideas into real products that will put people back to work, benefit consumers, and make America more competitive.

However, these efforts are supported by an intellectual property system, unknown to many, that promotes and rewards the risk-taking, investment and perseverance needed to transform ideas into solutions.  In return, protected intellectual property (IP) is made available to all so the world may learn and build upon others’ success.  But protecting IP at home, and in the foreign markets to which it is exported, is vital to this innovation cycle, and to the businesses, workers and consumers who rely on it.

As such, on September 30, 2009 the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Global Intellectual Property Center will bring together top business leaders, innovators, and key policymakers to discuss the challenges and opportunities confronting our nation’s innovative industries and workers in today’s environment.  They will also discuss how addressing these issues can help drive the economic growth, job creation, and progress mentioned above.

We hope you will join us for this opportunity to shape the public debate about intellectual property’s role in bringing about economic recovery and sustaining America’s competitiveness.
