Dear AMGDB Members,
It’s that time of year again! We are all getting busy with our academic commitments and we have an exciting get-away meeting planned for you in Quito, Ecuador. The meeting is as always over the Martin Luther King weekend, January 16-21st , 2013. Jose Rodriguez, President-elect, has organized a great meeting for us. There are many pressing issues facing academic leaders today and Jose has lined up a cast of speakers who can hopefully give us a helpful perspective .
The Scientific Session will include a talk by Cheryl Quinn who will speak about tech transfer and “bench to commercialization”.
The Public Policy session speakers include: Dr. Ann Bonham, Chief Scientific Officer at AAMC who will speak about “Diversity, health equity research, and the international environment for research.” Additional talks in this session will be given by Judy Bond, President of FASEB and Matthew Fenton, Director of Extramural research NIAID.
Quito is an incredibly interesting venue offering lots of outdoor activity with a myriad of parks, volcanoes, etc, as well as shopping. The city is famous worldwide for its artisan markets, with crafts from around the country and of all types.
We are offering a special discount for new members to attend this meeting to help entice them to become active in the group. For new chairs, this is a wonderful opportunity to meet your new colleagues and ask questions and hear their was stories. These times are unprecedented from the standpoint of research funding and we hope to learn how others are dealing with it and how we as an organization can respond. It is also a great opportunity for spouses to get away and meet other spouses.
We hope that you and your spouse/significant other will both be able to join us at the 2013 meeting to be held in Quito, Ecuador .
