The 6th annual Institute for Emotional Intelligence invites K-12 education, higher education, and business, government, and labor professionals to participate in a two-day forum on developing emotionally intelligent students, employees, and organizations. Established in 2004, the annual Institute for Emotional Intelligence provides opportunities for educators, researchers, practitioners, and leaders to share research and practical applications in emotional intelligence (EI) for primary-secondary education, higher education, and business, government, or organizational settings. A two day pre-conference EI Certification opportunity is also offered to study the Education and Transformational Theory of EI with its authors, Dr. Darwin Nelson and Dr. Gary Low.

NEW! Terri Amatuzzi, M.Ed. Co-Presenting with Dr. Dasinger and Dr. Maggard - A New Leadership Development Course at Air University: Embedding the Education Model of EI for Company Grade Officers (CGO). Ms. Amatuzzi serves as the Director of Student Services in the Community College of the Air Force, Maxwell-Gunter AFL, AL, where she has been since 2002. Ms. Amatuzzi has proudly served our troops in uniform through education service centers worldwide including posts in Treebeck, Netherlands; Geilenkirchen Air Base, Germany; Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany; and now Maxwell AFB, AL. She is also a doctoral Candidate in the Educational Leadership, Policy, and Law Program at Alabama State University.
Deeanna Antosh, Ph.D. Co-Presenting with Beverly Gammill - EI, EI Everywhere! Dr.
Antosh serves in Galveston College as the Director of Institutional
Research, Co-Director of the Quality Enhancement Plan, and Chair of the
Data Team and Core Team Member for the Achieving the Dream grant.
William C. Bailey, Ph.D. Presenting - EI in Medicine: A Review of Literature and Suggestions for Practical Applications.
Dr. Bailey is an Associate Professor of Family Sciences in the School
of Human Environment Sciences at the University of Arkansas. His
research interests include EI and its role in academic achievement and
personal growth, as well as family financial planning and counseling.
Michelle Beavers, Ph.D. Presenting - Predicting Leadership Success: An Exploration of EI as a Tool for Building and Strengthening Leadership. Dr. Beavers is the coordinator of the program and professor of Educational Leadership at Virginia State University.
Jorge Botello, Faculty Member at South Texas College. Co-Presenting with Mr. Gardner Reynolds and Mr. Terry Miller - COLLEGE SUCCESS: Creating A Transformational Course with Emotional Intelligence.
Mr. Botello is an instructor in the Developmental Division of the
College Success Department in South Texas College. Jorge brings 26
years of teaching and administrative experience from Texas public
schools.
Maryke Botes, B.A. (Honors/Psych). Presenting - Mentoring With EI: Creating Communities of Inclusiveness, Learning, and Success.
Mrs. Botes is an experienced educator and served as Student Counselor
and Life Skills Lecturer in the Directorate of Student Development and
Support in Tshwane University of Technology (TUT)-Pretoria, South
Africa. She is co-author of the Mind Synergy Course and has developed
and implemented the Student Mentor Program in TUT. Maryke is working
toward her Master's degree with a concentration in Emotional
Intelligence and is developing an E-Mentor Program for TUT. Maryke also
works with alternative education programs in Northland (Whangarei), New Zealand, where she now resides with her family.
Judith Cox, M.Ed. Presenting - The Impact of Folk Music in Developing Emotional Intelligence and Quantifying Emotional Intelligence: The Validation of the Relationship Skills Map (RSM).
Ms. Cox is a doctoral candidate in the Educational Leadership program
at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Her research focus is the
factorial structure and validation of the RSM.
Pearl Reyes-Dominguez, Ed.D. Co-Presenting with Mr. Joseph Fisher - Organizational Excellence: The Power of Emotional Intelligence in Professional Development Training Programs.
Dr. Dominguez is the Dean of Curriculum and Professional Development in
Hallmark College of San Antonio, Texas. Consulting regularly with
business and industry partners, Pearl aligns curriculum and instruction
with industry demands. Pearl takes particular pride in helping students
make positive transitions from college to productive careers. She also
enjoys using principals of the Education Model of EI in organizational
development initiatives.
Michael Elkins, Ph.D. Co-Presenting with David Worley, Ph.D. and Gary Low, Ph.D. - A Tree with Unlimited Diversity.
Dr. Elkins is Assistant Professor of Communication at Indiana State
University. Michael includes Emotional Intelligence, interpersonal
communication, communication education, intercultural communication,
and The First Year Experience among his research and teaching interests.
Ross F. Ellis, Ph.D. Co-Presenting with Mr. Len Heflich - Teaching and Training EI in the Manufacturing Environment: Not One Size Fits All! Dr.
Ellis is the President and founder of Strategic Resources Assessments,
Inc. He is also a Master Therapist, Certified Relationship Specialist,
and Diplomate of the American Psychotherapy Association. Ross holds
degrees in Psychology, Counseling, and Business, and is a certified
Adlerian Psychotherapist. Ross is a founding faculty member of the
Emotional Intelligence Training and Research Institute (EITRI)
specializing in business..
Forouzan Farnia, M.Ed. Presenting - Relationships between Emotional Intelligence Skills and Foreign Language Proficiency.
As the education supervisor and materials developer at the Nahid
Language School (NLS) in Tehran, Iran, Ms. Farnia runs the TOEFL
preparation courses and teaches general English to adults in both Azad
University and NLS.
Joseph Fisher, President of Hallmark College of San Antonio. Co-Presenting with Dr. Pearl Dominguez - Organizational Excellence: The Power of Emotional Intelligence in Professional Development Training Programs.
Mr. Fisher has worked in higher education for the past 18 years and has
particular expertise in the area of accreditation and administration.
Joe's previous postings include Chairman of Career Colleges and Schools
of Texas (CCST), Chair of Governmental Affairs for CCST, Chair of Texas
Higher Education Coordinating Board Committee for CCST, Treasurer of
Aviation Technician Higher Education Council, and committee positions

Dr. Gammill serves as the Emotional Intelligence Coordinator and
Coordinator of English in Galveston College. Emotional Intelligence is
a principal component in GC's QEP.
Cara Glidewell, B.A. Presenting The Effects of Emotional Intelligence within Intimate Relationships.
Ms. Glidewell is working toward her Master's Degree in Human
Development at the University of Arkansas. She is employed as a
research assistant at the University of Arkansas and has presented at
the National Council on Family Relations.

Karen L. Hammett, RN, BSN, CCM. Co-presenting with Rick Hammett - The
JCAHO Standard for Reducing Disruptive Behavior in Hospitals:
Leveraging EI and Personal Excellence in Critical Health Care Training.
Mrs. Hammett is the Case Management Division Officer in a regional
headquarters for Navy Medicine. Karen has taken all the graduate
courses in EI offered at Texas A&M University-Kingsville and is
working toward her Master's degree in Adult Education.

Dr. Hammett is owner of Hammett and Associates, Principal of Emotional
Intelligence Learning Systems, Inc., founding faculty member of
Emotional Intelligence Training and Research Institute (EITRI), and the
U.S. Representative of the Forum for Emotional Intelligence Learning
(FEIL) in India. Rick advocates for EI through the development and
delivery of collaborative education, training, coaching, and meaningful
research projects.
Janis Innis, M.A. Presenting - Not for Students Only: Benefits of Integrating Emotional Intelligence Skills in the Classroom Extend Beyond the Students.
Mrs. Innis is Professor of English and Assistant Chair of Developmental
Studies at Houston Community College-Southwest. She is the principal
author of the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) at Galveston College, a
strategic plan that prominently leverages the Education Model of
Emotional Intelligence. Janis was voted Teacher of the Year by her
students, is a recipient of the NISOD Excellence Award for Teaching,
and she uses the Education Model of EI in all her classes!
Kenda Josselet, M.A. Co-Presenting with Jenni Willis-Opalenik - Strengthening Student Success through Embedded Emotional Intelligence.
Ms. Josselet serves as the Instructor of Government and Chair of
General Studies in Galveston College. She is also a GC Teacher of the
Year (2006) and recipient of the NISOD Excellence Award (2008). As a
distance education instructor, Kenda's research interests include under
served populations and student success.
Madeline Justice, Ed.D. Co-Presenting with Lynn Veitch - Community College Developmental Education and Emotional Intelligence. Dr. Justice is Professor and Head in the Department of Educational Leadership at Texas A&M University-Commerce.
Charles Leitner, M.A., LCSW. Co-Presenting with Svetoslava Leitner and Rick Hammett - EI Interventions Among Diverse Populations with 1st, 5th, and 9th Grade students in Bulgaria. Mr.
Leitner is a Clinical Social Worker with experience across a wide range
of mental health specialties. Chuck brings over 30 years of counseling
experience to create EI interventions for children.
Svetoslava Leitner, M.PSY. Co-Presenting with Charles Leitner and Rick Hammett - EI Interventions Among Diverse Populations with 1st, 5th, and 9th Grade Bulgarian Students.
Mrs.
Leitner is an experienced psychologist working with disabled children
and their families through schools in Bulgaria. Sveta is currently
working with the Roma Culture and Education Research Centre to study
the impact of the education model of EI in K-12 Education.
Gary R. Dr.
Low is a Professor of Educational Leadership and Counseling at Texas
A&M University-Kingsville. He is co-author of several assessment
models based on an education approach to EI, as well as Emotional Intelligence: Achieving Academic and Career Excellence (2003).
Shao-Chieh (Vicki) Lu, Ed.D. Presenting - Evaluation
of EI Assessment in a National Award Winning Program with First-Year
College Students in a Hispanic Serving Institution. Dr. Lu
received her doctorate through the Joint Doctoral Program for
Educational Leadership at Texas A&M University-Kingsville and Texas
A&M University-Corpus Christi in Kingsville. Currently an
assistant professor in the Department of Education and English
Education Center at Tzu Chi University in Taiwan, Vicki's area of
concentration is educational research and statistics. Her research
interests include cross-cultural communication, instructional
technology, and educational psychology.
Patricia R. Maggard, Ph.D. Co-Presenting with Dr. Hank Dasinger and Terri Amatuzzi - A New Leadership Development Course at Air University: Embedding the Education Model of EI for Company Grade Officers (CGO). Dr.
Maggard is a Professor of Leadership, Ethics, and Communication Studies
at the Squadron Officer College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama. In
collaboration with her colleagues in Air University, and with input
from Nelson, Low, and Hammett, Patricia is developing an EI-Centric
Leadership course for implementation in the CGO leadership curriculum.
A cross-sectional (and prospective longitudinal) comparison is planned
to evaluate the efficacy of EI education on the leadership potential
of Air Force Officers.
Santos Martinez, Ed.D. Dr.
Martinez is Vice President for Student Services in Coastal Bend
College. Santos has published an online monograph titled Determining
Student Readiness for Online Instruction and collaborated with Nelson
and Low on the Personal Responsibility Map Professional Manual
published by Oakwood Solution, LCC and the Conover Company.
Juan Mejia, M.Ed. Mr.
Mejia is Chief Academic Officer and Provost at South Texas College.
Juan provides leadership to the instructional team through a model of
shared governance, and with 18 years in higher education, ably
represents the academic college community at the local, state,
national, and international levels. Juan is also a doctoral candidate
in the Joint Doctoral Program at Texas A&M University-Kingsville.
Margo Murray, MBA & CPT. Presenting EI Skills - A Must For Mentors.
Margo is a preeminent researcher, designer, and evaluator of
facilitated mentoring and has collaborated with clients on strategic
planning and mentoring processes in over 100 organizations in 26
countries. Her best-seller book, Beyond the Myths and Magic of Mentoring: How to Facilitate an Effective Mentoring Process,
is considered the seminal work on facilitated mentoring. Margo is
President & Chief Operating Officer of MMHA The Managers' Mentors,
Inc., an international consulting firm founded in 1974.
Terry Miller, Faculty Member at South Texas College. Co-Presenting
with Mr. Gardner Reynolds and Mr. Jorge Botello - COLLEGE SUCCESS:

Miller is Lead Instructor in the College Success Department of the
Developmental Division in South Texas College. Terry brings 35 years of

Mrs. Pettigrew is the President of The People Skills Company formed in
1989 and founder of The Healthy Workplace, Ltd., established in 1995.
Nancy provides coaching, consulting and training in the people side of
business, emphasizing the nature of the work experience as a key
indicator of personal job satisfaction and organizational productivity.
George R. Potter, Ed.D. Presenting Educational

Administration Students. Dr. Potter is an Assistant Professor of
Educational Administration in the Department of Professional Programs,
College of Education, in Texas A&M International University.

Michelle Stallone Brown, Ed.D. Co-Presenting with Dr. Carmen Tejedo Delgado Online Learning: The Adult Learner and Emotional Intelligence. Dr.
Stallone Brown is an Associate Professor of Education in the Department
of Educational Leadership and Counseling, as well as the Director of

Barbara G. Stottlemyer, Ed.D. Co-presenting with Ellie Perez, M.Ed. - School Redesign: EI-Centric Initiatives for Increasing Student Success and Achievement. Dr. Stottlemyer has twenty-five years experience as a teacher including eighteen at the middle school and high school level, and has served as the Academic Dean at Presbyterian Pan American School for the past eight years. She collaborated with Dr. Nelson and Dr. Low on the Personal Responsibility Map Professional Manual published and by Oakwood Solution, LCC and Conover Company. Her research interests include maximizing teacher effectiveness and student achievement. Ellie Perez holds certifications in Special Education, Educational Diagnostician, and Guidance and Counseling. She is currently the Guidance Counselor and Testing Coordinator at Presbyterian Pan American School.
Rito Silva, Ph.D. Dr.
Silva is the Director of Coastal Bend College-Alice Campus and former
Mayor of Alice, Texas. Rito earned his doctoral degree from Texas
A&M University-College Station, and his BBA and Masters in Guidance
and Counseling from Texas A&M University-Kingsville. His graduate
research project at TAMUK was among the first studies utilizing the
education model of emotional Intelligence.
Carmen Tejada-Delgado, Ed.D. Co-Presenting with Dr. Brown - Online Learning: The Adult Learner and Emotional Intelligence.
Dr. Delgado is an Assistant Professor of Education in Texas A&M
University-Corpus Christi. Carmen's research interests include teacher
quality, the effects of varied implementation processes in bilingual
education programs, and the implications of school leadership on
student achievement and success.
Maxine Trent, M.S., LPC, LMFT. Presenting The Emotional Skills Assessment Process (ESAP) in a Medical Residency Program and The Relationship Skills Map (RSM) in Scott & White's Homefront Project. Ms.
Trent has a variety of counseling experiences including private and
non-profit, hospital, outpatient clinic, private practice, and military
family service centers. Maxine has 20 years of therapy skills
development from which to draw in partnering with clients and
families in seeking new solutions to old problems.
Lynn Veitch, M.Ed. Co-Presenting with Dr. Madeline Justice: Community College Developmental Education and Emotional Intelligence.
Lynn studies as a doctoral candidate in the educational leadership
program at Texas A & M University-Commerce and works as a special
education teacher in the Discipline Alternative Education Program
(DAEP) at Lindale ISD.
Robert Vela, Ed.D., LPC, NCC.
Dr. Vela is the Dean of Student Affairs at San Antonio Community
College. He has also served as an adjunct professor for Sam Houston
State University and Capella University. Robert has worked in higher
education administration and as an educator for the last eleven years.
His work with EI started as a graduate student under the mentorship of
Dr. Low and Dr. Nelson. Robert actively and successfully pursues
educational innovations using EI.
Barbara Voss, Master Trainer. Presenting - City of Corpus Christi Workshops in Emotional Learning.
Barbara is an experienced personal coach who serves currently as the
Training Manager for the City of Corpus Christi, Texas. She is also a
retired HR director with the US Army.
Jenni Willis-Opalenik, M.Ed. Co-Presenting with Kenda Josselet - Strengthening Student Success through Embedded Emotional Intelligence. Jenni
is the Coordinator of Distance Learning, Instructional Design
Specialist, and Adjunct Instructor of Education in Galveston College.
David W. Worley, Ph.D. Co-Presenting with Michael Elkins, Ph.D. and Gary Low, Ph.D. A Tree with Unlimited Diversity and Emotional Intelligence and Servant Leadership.
Dr. Worley is the Director of Communication 101 and Chairperson of the
Department of Communication at Indiana State University. A well
published author and award winning educator, David counts classroom
instruction, communication education, instructional communication,
communication and people with disabilities, and nonviolent
communication among his passions and interests.

Additional Learning Outcomes
Work with certification peers to develop an EI initiative for your area(s) of
interest (school, college, university, government, or business).
Develop a personal understanding of EI education and training strategies based
on your unique interests, context, and needs.
Demonstrate an understanding of the complimentary aspects of the Transforma-
tional Theory of EI (Nelson & Low, 2003) and the Cognitive-Experiential
Self-Theory (CEST) of personality (Epstein, 1997).
Identify and define at least three personally meaningful emotional skills.
Explain at least one EI-Centric method for improving one’s quality of life.
Develop and explain your own model of emotionally intelligent leadership and
answer the question, “How does EI enhance or detract from strong leadership?”
During the certification workshop, participants will spend two days with the authors of the education and transformational theory of Emotional Intelligence (Nelson & Low, 2003). Darwin Nelson, Ph.D., Gary Low., Ph.D., and Rick Hammett, Ed.D. will facilitate an interactive self-exploration and personal development experience designed to increase your knowledge, rejuvenate your spirit, and provide you with the tools and confidence to design and deliver emotional intelligence (EI) initiatives for your students, clients, or employees.
Participants in the pre-conference workshop will become familiar with the Emotional Learning System (ELS)© certified by EI Learning Systems, Inc. to purchase and use the Emotional Skills Assessment Process (ESAP)©, Personal Excellence Map (PEM)© , and related products. New in 2009, an integrated EI Leadership model will also be introduced for the positive development of self and others within the organizational context. Both the Emotional Learning System (ELS)© and the integration of the experiential, rational, and behavioral systems are taught as essential constructs for understanding, applying, and teaching emotional intelligence.
Previously certified colleagues are invited to participate, update their knowledge, and contribute in a personally meaningful way at a reduced associate tuition rate. If previously certified, please contact Rick Hammett (888-680-7983) for more information about registering.
Continuing education units are offered for LPC and general education. For LPC’s, please include your LPC number on the registration form.
