The purpose of this conference is to:

Bring together educators and school administrators of students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12 to share strategies and expertise regarding bilingual education and second language acquisition, learning, and teaching.


The goals of this conference are to: 
  • Provide a retrospective of CAEBER over the past 12 years
  • Provide an ASL/English Bilingual Professional Development (AEBPD) update
  • Provide current research-based information in the field of bilingual education and second language learning and teaching practices in the United States
  • Provide a national forum for information sharing (current best practices) and information building (innovative practices)
  • Highlight contemporary basic, applied, and policy research that addresses the challenges deaf and hard of hearing learners encounter in current educational programs in the United States
  • Develop guiding principles for action and advocacy and build long-term support networks and partnerships among stakeholders
Who Should Attend

  • Administrators who have completed the week-long Enhancing Deaf Education: Language Planning and Leadership training through CAEBER's Language Planning Institute
  • Educators and educator support personnel who have completed all four levels of the AEBPD training
  • Graduates of the Gallaudet Leadership Institute 
  • Previous mentors under AEBPD or the STAR schools
  • Current AEBPD on-site mentors
  • University professors who have participated in pre-service teacher training with CAEBER
  • Researchers in the field of bilingual education for deaf and hard of hearing students
  • Graduates of MAT in ASL/English Bilingual Deaf Education
  • Current graduate students enrolled in the MAT in ASL/English Bilingual Deaf Education


    The 2009 CAEBER Conference is hosted by CAEBER's  Language Planning Institute, a unit within the College of Professional Studies and Outreach, with support from the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center and the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL).
