Expert Testimony and Report Writing

The focus of this workshop is the effective presentation of expert opinions to attorneys, judges and juries via report writing, affidavit preparation and testimony. Research regarding report writing and expert testimony is reviewed first, followed by a discussion of direct examination and cross examination techniques, strategies and ploys. Forensic reports, affidavits and videos of the expert testimony are reviewed and critiqued in detail.
Dr. Otto, who is an Associate Professor at the University of South Florida, has served as President of the American Board of Forensic Psychology and the American Psychology-Law Society, and is co-author of the third edition of Psychological Evaluations for the Courts: A Handbook for Mental Health Professionals and Lawyers.

Forensic Applications of the Rorschach

This workshop uses case excerpts, research reviews and transcripts of expert testimony to demonstrate the psycholegal relevance and forensic utility of Rorschach assessment; the admissibility of testimony based on Rorschach findings; the sensitivity of the Rorschach to malingering; and strategies for presenting and defending Rorschach finding in the courtroom.
Dr. Weiner is clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of South Florida. He is President of the Society of Clinical Psychology (APA Division 12) and Past President of the Society for the Personality Assessment. He is the author of Principles of Rorschach Assessment, co-author of Handbook of Personality Assessment, and co-editor of Handbook of Forensic Psychology.

Ethics in Forensic Practice

This workshop explores how to apply APA ethical principles and guidelines to conflicts that psychologists encounter when working as forensic practitioners, with an emphasis on reducing the likelihood of ethics complaints and malpractice actions. Topics include: competence to practice; confidentiality; roles of the expert; who is the client; assessment issues; responding to subpoenas and requests for raw data; and, ultimate opinion testimony.
Dr. Koocher serves as professor and Dean of the School of Health Sciences as Simmons college and Lecturer at Harvard Medical School. Elected a Fellow of twelve divisions of APA and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, he serves as editor of the journal, Ethics & Behavior, and has authored or edited 13 books, including: Ethics in Psychology and the Mental Health Professions: Standards and Cases.

Introduction to Child Custody and Parenting Evaluations

This workshop serves as an introduction to custody and parenting evaluations. Topics include preparation for custody work, establishing a practice as a custody evaluator, communications with attorneys and the courts, evaluation methodology, report writing,reducing the risk of board complaints and malpractice actions.
Dr. Martindale is the Reporter for the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts' Model Standards for Child Custody Evaluation and the co-author of The Art and Science of Child Custody Evaluations. His practice is limited to consulting with attorneys, psychologists and psychology boards in the area of child custody and professional standards.

Malingering and Forensic Practice: Conceptual Issues and Clinical Methods

This advanced workshop provides a conceptual framework for malingering with an emphasis on validated detection strategies and focuses on the use of psychological measures (e.g., MMPI-2 and PAI) to assess feigned mental disorders. Updated research on the SIRS is provided and, as a secondary focus, advances in the assessment of feigned cognitive impairments are reviewed. Participants are asked to bring a very brief feigning issue for the wrap -up discussion.
Dr. Rogers, Professor of Psychology at the University of North Texas, is author of the SIRS and edited the 3rd edition of Clinical Assessment of Malingering and deception. In 2007, he received the Halpern Award for Distinguished Contributions to Clinical Psychology in recognition of his work in forensic assessment.

Interrogations and Disputed Confessions

This workshop explores how psychologists can contribute to criminal cases involving disputed confessions. Considered are a number of issues relevant to Miranda waiver cases including voluntariness of confessions, competence to waive Miranda right and reliability of confessions. With respect to each issue ethical contours, relevant psychological research and appropriate assessment techniques are presented and discussed.
Dr. DeClue is in independent practice in Florida, where confession issues constitute a significant concentration of his work. He is the author of the book, Interrogations and Disputed Confessions: A Manual for Forensic Psychological Practice, which is published by Professional Resource Press.

Preparing for Board Certification in Forensic Psychology
