About the Event
New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity is honored to be a participating affiliate in the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project 2008. During the weeklong event, NOAHH will Blitz 7 homes, frame and dry-in 25 homes, and dedicate 25 more. New construction projects will all be located in New Orleans Upper 9th Ward neighborhood, expanding NOAHH’s footprint on this recovering neighborhood.
Beginning with Opening Ceremonies on Sunday May 11, 2008, NOAHH will kickoff an exciting and monumental build week. New construction projects on NOAHH homes will be focused in the Upper 9th Ward. Since the Hurricane, NOAHH has focused much of its rebuilding efforts here with the Musicians’ Village accounting for 72 single family homes. This concentrated building has served as a catalyst for
non-Habitat homeowners to return and rebuild their homes.
NOAHH homes are built on cement piers, keeping our homeowners above the flood line and out of harms way should there be another flood. Skilled subcontractors prep the build site, drive pilings, pour the foundation, and fill cement blocks. Framing sponsors and volunteers then construct floor-systems, wall sections, and dry-in the house with the roof, windows and doors. This protects the house from the frequent New Orleans thunderstorms while the rest of the house is constructed.
Blitz Build homes will be taken from floor system to turn-key during the week long build. While this may seem like an impossible task, we assure you, this can be done. Blitz Build Sponsors and volunteers will work under the guidance and direction of skilled Habitat construction supervisors, many of whom have volunteered with past Jimmy Carter Work Projects. The week will end with a dedication ceremony, presenting keys to our incredible partner families.
In addition, NOAHH and its partners will dedicate 25 homes that are currently under construction. Volunteers will spend a day on last touches, interior paint, trim, and landscaping. These homes are located in various neighborhoods throughout NOAHH’s service area and represent the commitment of hundreds of volunteers and sponsors from across the country.
JRCWP volunteer packages include accommodations (single or double occupancy); meals; transportation and special event tickets. Be a part of the progress that is rebuilding New Orleans – Volunteer Today!!!
