Programs and schools for deaf and hard of hearing children have seen a significant increase in the number of students identified with autism spectrum disorders. Despite the fact that there are a staggering number of conferences and seminars centered on autism, few have focused specifically on deaf and hard of hearing children with autism spectrum disorders.
On October 24-25, 2008 professionals and families will gather to present research, discuss best practices, and share their experiences of working with and caring for deaf and hard of hearing children with autism. We will explore the different ways that we can positively impact the social, emotional and communication challenges commonly associated with autism for our learners who use sign language.
Signing on the Spectrum also recognizes the unique circumstances of Deaf families who are raising hearing children with autism. We anticipate that this conference will be beneficial for these families as well.
With our shared goal of meeting the needs of deaf and hard of hearing children, and CODAs (children of Deaf adults) with autism, Signing on the Spectrum will provide a forum for professionals and families to learn from and build upon autism resources currently available, and at the same time tap into the expertise of deaf educators, the Deaf Community and other conference participants.
