ABOUT THE YOUTH SERVICE INSTITUTE

Youth service is a proven strategy for improving communities across the globe and practitioners are continually growing, learning, and implementing better practices for community and youth development.

The 2007 Youth Service Institute (YSI) will unite participants from the service, service-learning, and youth development fields for three days of inspiration and innovation. Youth and adult attendees will develop and build their impact and scale by sharing effective practices and engaging in workshops that illustrate the strength and power of the youth service movement.

The Youth Service Institute is the ideal environment for participants to further develop their organizations and programs while learning and sharing inventive ways to engage young people as assets and resources on Global Youth Service Day and throughout the year.

YOUTH SERVICE INSTITUTE THEME

Youth service allows young people to take action on very real and very serious social issues, transforming themselves and their communities. The youth service field is at a position of strength. This maturity, combined with better positioning in the public’s eye and on the candidates’ platforms, and with record participation by youth allows us to think bigger and more boldly about breadth and depth. By “surfing the wave of change,” we are embracing the opportunity to conquer some of the world’s most challenging issues through youth service and encouraging others to become engaged in this movement.

The Youth Service Institute will focus on four target areas of service and service-learning success:

  • Addressing critical global issues through strategic service
  • Increasing the impact of youth service: effective methods
  • Engaging youth audiences not typically asked to serve (disadvantaged youth, youth with disabilities, younger children, etc.)
  • Planning effective projects: nuts and bolts
