SAXS Software Packages Irena and Nika Fall 2014 Course

SAXS Software Packages Irena and Nika Fall 2014 Course

Please Note: The Irena and Nika packages cannot be used for analysis of most bioSAXS data - that data is for protein shape reconstruction and similar problems, and would use a different software package (e.g., ATSAS). Please make sure you consider this when registering!

Organizer: Jan Ilavsky, XSD, APS

When: Thurs.- Fri., September 18-19, 2014

Times: Course will nominally run from 9:00 am until 4:30 pm each day

Where: APS Bldg. 402, E1100/1200

Number of participants: limit 20 attendees

Cost: free

Successful small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) experiment requires appropriate data reduction and analysis tools. Igor Pro based packages Nika (for SAXS data reduction) and Irena (for SAXS data analysis) were developed during the last 10 years at the APS. They are already being used widely for material science SAXS at the APS and at other facilities worldwide. These tools are commonly taught during "Beyond Rg" - SAXS short course organized semi-annually by APS SAXS SIG (most recently October 2013). However, the main audience of the SAXS short course is new SAXS users, starting with their own SAXS program and therefore it focuses more heavily on experiments, theory etc. The time devoted in this course for software is insufficient for experienced experimenters interested in complex software applications.

Therefore, the APS SAXS Special Interest Group (SIG) is organizing this specialized, hands-on, course specifically on the SAXS software Nika and Irena. The course will be taught by the software author, Jan Ilavsky, APS staff member. In order to provide high educational value, the number of participants will be limited to 20. Participants are expected to have a high level of SAXS experience and bring their own computers (Windows or OSX). In addition, they are encouraged to bring their own SAXS experimental results.

Preliminary two-day course syllabus:

Thursday morning/early afternoon: Installation of the Igor Pro and Irena and Nika packages on users’ computers, data reduction using Nika of example SAXS data including calibration, mask design, and necessary corrections. Examples for transmission and grazing incidence data will be provided. Discussion and help with data reduction of users data will follow.

Thursday afternoon/Friday all day: Data analysis using Irena (all steps necessary including import/export, modifications, and plotting of data). Presentation and hands-on education for use of Irena tools (unified fit, size distribution, modeling, analytical models, small-angle diffraction etc.). Explanation of advanced support tools such as scripting tool will be included. The lectures will be paced based on users’ progress, and time will be left for questions and answers, leaving users to "play" with the demonstration or their own data.

This course has concluded.
