Blast explosions have been the primary cause of morbidity and mortality in military personnel deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.  In addition to being the primary cause of traumatic burns and amputations, blast exposure is the primary cause of combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI).  This presentation will review the symptomatology, etiology, and epidemiology of PTSD and TBI after blast exposure.  It will also review the research opportunities at UTHSCSA and UTSA to examine the diagnosis, prognosis, prevention, and treatment of PTSD and TBI in military service members and veterans.
