We are delighted to offer to host you at CASE HQ for a Rhino+Grasshopper Essentials Workshop. Training will be August 25-27 starting at 9 AM, ending at 4 PM with lunch from 12-1 PM.  Your trainer will be one of our amazing CASE Building Information Specialists. Earn 18 LUs for AIA or other professional credentials.

Rhino has become the Swiss army knife of digital design tools.  At an early stage of the design process, Rhino can be used as an iterative tool for exploring concepts.  In later stages, it serves as a powerful tool for developing geometry and rationalizing complex systems.  Rhino supports a wide array of file formats so it can be combined with AutoCAD, Revit, or other BIM or documentation software, to become the basis for highly accurate construction documents, shop drawings, or direct to fabrication models.

In this workshop, attendees will learn to create complex conceptual massing in Rhino, use Rhino’s powerful surface tools to manipulate these forms, and fenestrate the surface of that mass.  Attendees will also learn robust techniques for presentation and conceptual visualization.

Day 01: Introduction to Rhino

Learning Objectives

  1. Proficiency with the Rhino Interface
  2. Understand basic NURBS modeling concepts
  3. Ability to accurately create and edit complex geometric forms
  4. Understand basic automation of iterative modeling processes using “history”
  5. Ability to map basic textures and patterns onto NURBS objects
  • Deliverables
    • Accurately modeled Gherkin tower
    • 2D & 3D exports to AutoCAD and Illustrator

Day 02: Advanced Surfaces and Visualization

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand methods for applying advanced surface patterns to NURBS objects
  2. Create compelling and highly customized visualizations
  3. Create and edit analytical drawings
  • Deliverables
    • Rendered Perspective views
    • 2D export to AutoCAD and Illustrator
    • 2D & 3D sections for documentation and visualization

Day 03: Introduction to Grasshopper

The Grasshopper plug-in training will demonstrate how the Grasshopper interface paired with Rhinoceros can be used as a tool to quickly conceive, modify, and develop parametric building forms with iterative controls. This training will also explain how this software can generate essential non-visual building data for use in analysis as well as 3D geometry.

  1. Understand the relationship between Rhino and Grasshopper
  2. Create and manipulate basic definitions for, iterative parametric designs
  3. Understand and use attractor points
  4. Understand basic data structure
  5. Apply patterns and panels to a surface
  6. Applying paneling Tools in Grasshopper
  7. Develop simple color gradients analysis

    • Parametric surface paneling
    • Parametric structural grid
    • Color gradient analysis
