BIO welcomes biographers, editors, agents, publishers, and publicity professionals from across the nation and around the world to the Sixth Annual Biographers International Conference, June 5–6 in Washington, DC. During this two-day event, biographers have the opportunity to network, interact, and deepen their knowledge of and commitment to the craft of life writing.

On Friday, June 5, BIO will offer morning and afternoon tours of key research facilities in Washington. Friday evening’s opening reception will be held at the Georgetown home of celebrated biographer Kitty Kelley.

On Saturday, June 6, the conference kicks off at the National Press Club with a breakfast plenary session featuring Evan Thomas and Douglas Brinkley in conversation, and continue with lively panels and solo speakers, including Betty Boyd Caroli, Linda Leavell, David Maraniss, and Hampton Sides. Sessions will focus on topics such as research and writing techniques, market trends, book promotion, working with an agent, and short-form biography. In addition, a wide range of issues will be covered, including “Civil War Women,” “Biography as History,” “Diagnosing Your Subject’s Medical Condition,” “The Rewards and Challenges of Writing Lives of Color,” “Writing About Writers,” “Privacy and the Biographer,” and “Writing About Someone You Know.”

BIO is also launching a concurrent series of coaching sessions, during which published or beginning biographers can discuss their own projects with accomplished biographers in half-hour sessions. (Available only to BIO Active Members.)

During lunch, Taylor Branch, the winner of the 2015 BIO Award, will give the keynote address. Past BIO Award winners have included Pulitzer Prize winners Robert Caro, Stacy Schiff, and Ron Chernow.

A reception at the end of the day will feature book sales and a select group of vendors offering goods and services of special interest to biographers. The conference will conclude with the presentation of the BIO Plutarch Award for the best biography of 2014.
