During our two days together, Jill will explicitly show you how to teach any student to think critically about what they’re reading.  What she’s found in classrooms is that kids can think about what they’ve read… but they are not receiving straightforward instruction on HOW to do it. Kids are resorting to guessing, hedging their answers, or avoiding contributing to discussions or writing about text altogether. When teachers say, “My kids can’t write!” or “My kids don’t analyze what they read!”, what they’re really saying is, “My kids don’t know how to write or analyze what they read!”

Here’s the good news: We can turn that around, and it doesn’t have to be hugely cumbersome or time-consuming!

…Enter Jill’s straightforward techniques for teaching kids how to independently think deeply about text. She has designed 15 simple techniques that help every student think critically about what they’ve read. When well taught, the 15 techniques become automatic habits for kids. When kids own these automatic habits, they become independent readers capable of thinking critically about nearly everything they read. And isn’t that the whole point?

Jill will teach and model each of the 15 different techniques and then coach you as you practice each technique right away.

Three highlights of your two days:
  1. You will learn how each of the 15 techniques aligns with Core Standards.
  2. You will learn how each of the 15 techniques can be used to bring struggling comprehenders to benchmark.
  3. You will receive a copy of Jill’s latest book, How to Teach Students to Critically Think About Text, which includes specific K-12 resources to take back and use right away.
