Course Description and Statement of Need

Unintentional traumatic injury is the leading cause of death in young adults between the ages of 18-50. Orthopaedic trauma involves serious injuries to bones and joints, including complex fractures and dislocations that can result in complications. These potentially limb-threatening or life-altering injuries commonly the result of high-energy trauma from car accidents, falls, sporting activities and industrial accidents, require critical decision-making strategies for immediate care and surgical interventions. To add to the complex dynamics of trauma care, an unintended consequence of EMTALA legislation resulted in making legitimate transfer of seriously injured patients to level-1 trauma centers more difficult. With more patients with complex injuries remaining at the admitting hospital, the responsibility for care is placed on the surgeons practicing at non-trauma hospitals. This has increased the need for these surgeons who take emergency calls to be current with contemporary methods of fracture management.

This conference will to present the latest techniques and algorithms for the care of patients with complex lower extremity injuries for the benefit of orthopedic surgeons, emergency room physicians and other clinicians and healthcare professionals who routinely see patients with pelvic and acetabular fractures, hip dislocations and fractures, patella fractures, peri-prosthetic femur factures, and peri-articular fractures. Expert faculty will provide insight into damage control orthopedics, the care of the multiply injured patient, the timing for fracture care, adjuvants to open fracture care, transfusion protocols, and DVT prophylaxis using a combination of didactic lectures, case studies, panel discussions and audience engagement.
