Course Description

The Training Institute on Strangulation Prevention is excited to offer a 4-day Advanced Strangulation Course in Fort Worth, TX from October 24-27, 2017.

Those who wish to attend must apply no later than September 30, 2017. Submitting an application does not guarantee you a spot at the training. We will respond within 3 weeks from the date your application is submitted. 

The Institute welcomes both individuals and multi-disciplinary teams to attend however, preference will be given to professionals attending as part of a multi-disciplinary team. 

Strangulation has been identified as one of the most lethal forms of domestic violence and sexual assault.This course has been specifically created for professionals seeking to improve the investigation and prosecution of strangulation cases in their communities. The course will equip attendees with strategies to properly assess for non-fatal strangulation, advocate for the specific medical and safety needs of strangulation survivors, and testify as effective expert witnesses. This course is designed for communities seeking to implement new protocols, create system-wide changes, launch a strangulation response team, or learn about best practices.

Our Faculty Includes National Experts in the Field:
Casey Gwinn, JD, Gael Strack, JD, Dr. Bill Smock, The Honorable Michael Denton, Det. Michael Agnew (ret), Kelsey McKay, JD. Michael Burke and James Henderson.

The course will cover an in-depth examination of:
  • The most current research on domestic violence and sexual assault strangulation crimes
  • Medical signs and symptoms of strangulation assaults
  • Long term consequences, delayed death, and fatal strangulation
  • Investigative strategies, report writing, and interviewing witnesses
  • Clinical documentation of strangulation signs and symptoms
  • Strategies for advocacy and working with traumatized victims
  • Development of local experts
  • Use of experts in court, including tips for testifying
Attendees with have the opportunity to:
  • View a crime scene and work in a multi-disciplinary team to investigate a strangulation case and prepare evidence for a mock trial
  • Apply trauma-informed investigation and advocacy techniques
  • Practice testifying as an expert witness and practice cross-examining an expert witness
  • Bring strangulation cases from their community for review by faculty members
  • Develop strategies for implementing best practices in their community
  • Practice giving a 5-minute presentation on strangulation

Attendees will also be provided with comprehensive course materials and handouts not offered in any other setting.

Continuing Education Credits

This conference will provide MCLE (Attorneys) credits for applicable sessions for California residents.

Attorneys outside of California wishing to obtain credit must file for credit individually. All of the information necessary to apply for credits (outside of CA) will be provided on-site.   

Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) accreditation pending approval. 
This CNE activity has been jointly provided by JPS Health Network collaboratively with The Alliance For Hope.

    If you are accepted into the October 2017 Advanced Course you will receive notice within 3 weeks of your registration date. Registration includes entry to the entire course, comprehensive course materials, and a Certificate of Attendance. California MCLEs will be provided for appropriate sessions.
