About the Seminar

Orientation to Cave Rescue (OCR) consists of classroom and fieldwork in all phases of cave rescue including underground environment, vertical operations, extrication techniques, medical management, communications systems, and the organization and management of cave rescue operations. Participants typically include cavers, emergency service personnel, and emergency managers. OCR provides a solid foundation for the Level One course held at periodic regional seminars and annual NCRC national seminars.   The seminar provides approximately 16 hours of instruction over 2 days. Fieldwork can be strenuous, and participants must be in good physical health. Students should be prepared to work in difficult situations, both above and below ground.   Participants must review and sign a liability waiver at check-in registration. Persons under the age of 18 should contact the Registrar prior to registering.

We will also be offering a Vertical Workshop (free) Friday evening from 5PM-8PM. We will focus on personal vertical systems. This would be a good time to tune your system, replace old components, try new equipment, or learn how to use a new kit!!

There is extremely limited bunk space at the fieldhouse, which will be used by OCR staff, so come prepared to camp.  The fieldhouse has a kitchen, AC and heat, and covered porches for our classes.  There are rather nice outdoor showers and a toilet, but all water is from rainwater catchment.  Keep in mind that this is a desert environment.  Plan to arrive Friday evening, and give yourself plenty of time to negotiate the ranch roads and gates.  Detailed directions and a map will be sent to all registrants.  Meals will be provided for the weekend, including a Friday night snack.  BYO beverages and at least 5 gallons of drinking water per person to be left at the fieldhouse.  (Please call DJ Walker at the number below if you have any special food needs.) There are no hotels, gas stations, convenience stores, or any other services for an hour and a half in any direction.  But you can get cellular service.
