Medical Marijuana/CBD Oil is fast becoming a very popular medication in California.  How does it work? How is it legally prescribed? What can we legally do in schools with this medication? Our speakers will address these questions and more.

Dr. Adam Numis, MD  is a pediatric neurologist and epileptologist at the UCSF Epilepsy Center.
He specializes in the evaluation and treatment of children with epilepsy, with a dedication to the treatment of children and adolescents with difficult to treat seizures. He is leading the development of the UCSF Infantile Spasms Center, with the aim of improving the diagnosis, treatment and outcomes of this particularly severe type of epilepsy.

Numis' research includes evaluating the connection between inflammation and epilepsy. His work attempts to understand how inflammatory markers in the blood may help predict which patients may respond best to a particular anti-seizure medication. Additionally, his work seeks to understand the role inflammation may play in the development of epilepsy in certain at-risk populations, including children with traumatic brain injury, genetic disorders and stroke.

Numis received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. Subsequently, he completed a residency in pediatrics at Boston Children's Hospital, a residency in child neurology at UCSF, and fellowships in clinical neurophysiology and epilepsy at UCLA. He is triple board certified in neurology with special qualifications in child neurology, clinical neurophysiology and epilepsy.

Numis is a member of the American Epilepsy Society, American Academy of Neurology and the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society. He is an assistant professor of neurology and pediatrics at UCSF.

Joan Edelstein will be presenting on Marijuana and School Nurses.  Students with some forms of epilepsy respond to Cannabadiol (CBD), a component of marijuana/cannabis. Learn about the history of cannabis; research on its therapeutic effects and why research has been limited; the FDA approved CBD drug for use by prescription and implications for school nurses; the ethics and laws affecting use of medical cannabis in the school setting.

Lydia Bourne will provide the GRC Committee update and speak about recents laws and judgements related to Medical Marijuana.
