Overview

The Diversifying Education Abroad - From Discussion To Action workshop focuses on increasing awareness of barriers, exploring best practices and building a plan of action to support increased participation of students from diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds in education abroad programs. Topics include personal and institutional challenges, success strategies, student support throughout the study abroad process, and development and implementation of an action plan.

Who Should Attend?

The full day workshop is designed to provide anyone committed to increasing diversity in education abroad with the knowledge, skills, and awareness they need to broaden participation in programs. Specifically faculty members, international education professionals, diversity/multicultural professionals, and other education professionals who work with diverse student populations.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will leave the workshop with specific tools and a cohesive strategy for increasing participation in education abroad for students from diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds at their institution or organization.

Workshop outcomes include:

  • Increased confidence in advising and programming for diverse student populations
  • Awareness of individual and institutional barriers that impact students from diverse backgrounds throughout the education abroad process (from initial inquiry through re-entry)
  • Enhance knowledge of tools and skills needed to address these barriers
  • Ability to develop a plan of action for addressing specific institutional issues related to diversity in education
