2012 NNPHI Annual Conference: Leveraging Public Health Institutes for Systems Change

The National Network of Public Health Institutes (NNPHI) is proud to announce its 11th annual conference, to be held on May 21-23, 2012 in New Orleans, Louisiana. 

This year's theme, Leveraging Public Health Institutes for Systems Changewill explore opportunities on the horizon and currently underway, for public health systems partners to utilize the broad range of capacities of the nation's public health institutes to be a catalyst for systems change.  This year's conference will share examples of public health institutes working in close collaboration with state and local health departments as well as many partners, to support current opportunities for systems change, such as implementation of the Affordable Care Act, the growing field of Health Impact Assessments, National Voluntary Accreditation and the National Public Health Improvement Initiative and Community Health Assessments. Additional conference topics may include evidence-based public health and the exploration of relationships between public health institutes and their government partners.

Roundtable Discussions
Two (2) roundtable sessions will be held this year to maximize small group discussion at the 2012 NNPHI Annual Conference. Representatives from public health institutes, health policy centers and national partner organizations will lead 45-minute discussions based on the core competencies that share skills and strategies or hot topics.  To submit an abstract for a roundtable discussion, please visit the Present, Sponsor, Exhibit tab on the conference website.

Breakout Sessions

Several breakout sessions will be held allowing conference attendees to dig deeper on current and emerging health topics. Representatives from public health institutes, health policy centers and national partner organizations will lead one-hour sessions, designed to be highly interactive and educational, that highlight innovative projects and programs that address critical health topics. To submit an abstract for a breakout session, please visit the Present, Sponsor, Exhibit tab on the conference website.




The conference participants will include a diverse mix of public health professionals including representatives from:

  • Emerging public health institutes
  • State and local health departments
  • National partners and trade organizations

THRIVE Training with Prevention Institute- May 21, 2012 (8:00am- 4:30pm)
A one-day train the trainer THRIVE workshop will be held on Monday, May 21st from 8:00am- 4:30pm, at the 2012 NNPHI Annual Conference. If you are interested in attending the THRIVE workshop, please click here to register.
Only 30 slots are available for the THRIVE training; nine of those slots have been reserved for the three public health institutes (PHIs) selected as pilot sites (three representatives from each institute). The remaining 21 slots are on a first come, first serve basis. Since space is limited, all organizations are asked to limit registration to up to two representatives. If demand for the training is high, NNPHI and Prevention Institute will create a wait list for interested individuals and may ask organizations to send only one representative to the training (with the exception of the three funded PHIs).

Sustainability Workshop – May 21, 2012 (12:00-3:00pm) 
NNPHI invites all members to attend the Sustainability Workshop on Monday, May 21st from 12:00-2:45PM.  Lunch will be served and we encourage members to consider having multiple staff attend the workshop so that they can take full advantage of the breakout sessions offered.  You will find an agenda  on the registration website that provides more detail on the content for the workshop. The goals of the Sustainability Workshop are:
  • Share the activities of the NNPHI Board and Staff in the current strategic planning process and the plan for addressing member feedback
  • To orient NNPHI members to the available technical assistance at NNPHI and to gather feedback on the next edition of the Guide for Developing Public Health Institutes
  • To host breakout sessions focused on three topics related to business development and sustainability.  Each breakout will be designed so that participants leave with greater connectivity to their colleagues on shared topics of interest as well as NNPHI staff will have feedback from members on how to support these three topics in the next year

Welcome Reception – May 21, 2012 (5:00-6:30pm) 
The NNPHI board and staff will welcome conference participants at a reception at the historic Hotel Monteleone. The reception is a great opportunity to re-connect with colleagues and friends. 

Evening Reception – May 22, 2012 (7:00-10:00pm) 
Join us again this year at Muriel's Restaurant! Located in the heart of the French Quarter, NNPHI Annual Conference attendees will be treated to a traditional New Orleans-style celebration with creole cuisine, jazz music and a stunning balcony view of St. Louis Cathedral and some of the oldest architechture in the French Quarter.
