Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop

"You can write!" Those three words changed Erma Bombeck's life and launched a career of a dozen best-selling books and more than 4,000 syndicated columns. In a 1991 interview, Erma recalled timidly slipping a humorous essay under the office door of Brother Tom Price, a University of Dayton English professor who served as faculty adviser to the literary magazine, The Exponent.

"He said to me three magic words: `You can write,'" Erma recalled. "I needed it (that encouragement) at the time. It's all I needed as an impetus to keep going, and it sustained me for a very long time." Erma graduated from the University of Dayton with a degree in English in 1949.

Every other year, the University of Dayton — in conjunction with the Bombeck family — provides encouragement and instruction for aspiring and experienced humor and human interest writers through the Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop. The two-day, three-night workshop includes keynote speakers, panel discussions and breakout sessions on writing, marketing and publishing. The 2012 workshop will feature more than 25 speakers.
