This course is designed to help anyone facing the managing or leading of technical teams. The course will help those with and without the domain knowledge of the team they manage. It also will benefit those that already lead a team and wish to learn from other experiences and share their own journey.

 This course draws from the book, Lessons Learned, written by the presenter and tells stories of his experiences and lessons learned. The many fast paced stories are presented to encourage you to think of related experiences and draw out your own set of lessons. The decades covered by the course include periods of ‘chaotic economic fluctuations’ which challenge individuals and corporations alike.

  1. Introductions
  2. Approach to the Course - Generally a lesson is given from the presenter’s experience, the audience is given time to reflect on their experiences and there is an interactive discussion of what was learned or perhaps should have been learned.
  3. Early Recollections - Now that you are (or want to be) in a management position, what might you have from your past to help you now?
  4. Lessons from a Start-up - A start-up presents many opportunities (and risks). Some of the unexpected lessons are presented in this section that served the presenter well in his future.
  5. Wild and Prime Wild - What happens when you are involved in a “bleeding edge” project that is more complex and bigger than the company originally thought; especially in uncertain times? This section has many stories on what is involved in quickly pulling together and keeping a talented team as well as trials and tribulations of a hostile take over bid. It also covers the perils of unmanaged expectations and managing expectations.
  6. Large Company Blues - Working within a large company has many benefits but also its own set of pitfalls. This section presents stories of new management challenges, merging projects, questionable approaches to winning business and equally questionable decisions that are made in running a corporation.
  7. Successful Growth and Prospects - This set of stories cover some of the presenter’s experiences in helping grow an international software company from $50 million to $170 million responsible as a VP of development and finally as their CTO before their successful sale to Pitney Bowes.
  8. Final Thoughts - This section summarizes many of the points discovered during the previous sections and covers some of the ones important but which did not make it into an explicit story.

George Moon:

George Moon has over thirty years of experience in the fields of technical management and leadership in various international executive positions as well as building complex software systems. Mr. Moon is a multiple U.S. software patent holder, a 2009 inventor of the year for Pitney Bowes, led a core group of advanced developers and researchers through many of his years, and a Fellow of Calumet College.
