1. TEACHING AND SCHOLARSHIP AS THE PLACE OF GOD'S CALLING AND BLESSING:

     We will discuss the dignity of knowing and teaching under the creation mandate of Genesis 1:26 and Psalm 8:6.
            What knowledge is and does, in all areas
            The indispensable role of spiritual knowledge for life, including the
                 academic life
            What is "spirit" and "spiritual"
            Faith in the context of knowledge
            The questions to which a secular academy has no answer
            Serving God with our students and in our professional associations
            Knowledge of the spiritual life in beauty, truth, and goodness--the ends
                  and aims of academic existence

2.  LIVING WISELY IN THE LIFE OF TEACHING AND SCHOLARSHIP:

     We will discuss having rest and strength for your life and work.
             Taking charge of the direction and order in your life:  keeping your
                 calendar
             On not letting others or circumstances set your agenda
             What is really important--you must decide
             Escaping the atmosphere of graduate education
             The secret of living free of hurry and of not having too much to do
             Integrating spiritual disciplines into your life, and accomplishing
                  things in the power of God
             Sleeping well

Dr. Willard has been at USC since 1965, where he was director of the School of Philosophy from 1982-1985. He has also taught at the University of Wisconsin (Madison), where he received his Ph.D. in 1964, and has held visiting appointments at UCLA and the University of Colorado.

His philosophical publications are mainly in the areas of epistemology, the philosophy of mind and of logic, and on the philosophy of Edmund Husserl, including extensive translations of Husserl's early writing from German into English. His Logic and the Objectivity of Knowledge, appeared in 1984 as a study of Husserl's early Philosophy.

He also lectures and publishes in religion. Knowing Christ Today was published in 2009. The Great Omission, published in 2006, received a Christianity Today award in the Christian Living Category. Renovation of the Heart was published in May 2002, and received Christianity Today's 2003 Book Award in the category of Spirituality. The Divine Conspiracy was released in 1998, and selected Christianity Today's "Book of the Year" for 1999. The Spirit of the Disciplines appeared in 1988, and Hearing God (1999) first appeared as In Search of Guidance in 1984.
