In 2012 the Almaden Institute will focus on superconductivity, a phenomenon that has attracted interest for more than a century, and which has received even greater attention since the discovery at the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory in 1987 of a new class of materials – copper oxide perovskites - which superconduct at unexpectedly high temperatures.  The origin of the pairing mechanism that give rise to superconductivity in these materials, as well as in several other families of exotic materials discovered in the past few years, is a subject of considerable debate.   A fundamental question is whether it is possible to find classes of materials that could superconduct near room temperature and, if so, how to predict or engineer such  materials.  Can we, for example, draw from known materials empirical rules or guidelines to materials that could superconduct at higher temperatures?    

The 2012 Institute will focus on broad classifications of materials, based on their bonding, structure and chemistry, as well as their physical properties, that might help to identify possible new superconducting materials with higher transition temperatures.  Non-equilibrium structures and interfaces, in particular, may provide an important route to novel superconductors. The successful finding of a material superconducting near room temperature would have enormous technological import and, for example, help to solve the world’s energy problems, provide for faster computers, allow for novel memory-storage devices, and enable ultra-sensitive sensors, among many other possibilities.

The workshop will be preceded by a series of tutorials on the themes of the Institute for all interested.   The school and workshop is funded by IBM Research and the MAINZ School of Excellence.   While there is no registration fee for the Institute, space in the School and Institute is limited.
