CONFERENCE SUMMARY

The Ports-to-Plains Alliance is excited to hold our 2012 Annual Conference Oct. 2-4, 2012 in Medicine Hat, Alberta. This event is co-hosted by the Texas Department of Transportation, the Government of Alberta, and partners of the Eastern Alberta Trade Corridor which are Palliser Economic Partnership, Battle River Alliance for Economic Development and Alberta HUB. The Eastern Alberta Trade Corridor is the northern portion of the Ports-to-Plains Alliance connecting investment opportunities with Canada to the United States and Mexico.

We expect over 200 conference attendees from throughout the corridor – from Canada, the United States, and Mexico.  Speakers will address topics that focus on growing our rural economies based on agriculture and energy including transportation infrastructure, trade policy and border crossings.

Participants will include industry leaders, business leaders, and representatives from local, provincial, federal, and state governments. Economic development and chamber of commerce individuals from Mexico, United States and Canada who influence public decision making regarding trade, regulation, purchasing and political priorities will also be attending.

The Medicine Line - 49th Parallel
This year's conference theme is OPENING UP THE MEDICINE LINE.  In the frontier days when battles between U.S. troops and Native Americans were common, the tribes would often flee north into British/Canadian territory to rest and recuperate after a fight. Because the land north of the 49th Parallel was not American territory, U.S. soldiers were forced to stop at that point, and allow the tribes to get away. For its apparent magical ability to stop advancing American troops, Native Americans gave the 49th Parallel the name "Medicine Line," a term that shows how tribes at that time believed medicine and magic to be closely connected.

A century later, the Medicine Line deserves our respect for many different reasons: the history of peaceful coexistence it represents, and the model it offers for the future.

The Ports-to-Plains Alliance strives to improve trade in both directions of the Medicine Line:

  • To ease the movement of people, goods and services
  • To set aside the old ideas of why the Medicine Line was originally placed between Canada and the U.S.
  • To ensure the relationship we have between all our nations: Canada, United States and Mexico is positive and continues to grow
  • To enforce the "Beyond the Borders" initiative recently signed by our respective leaders
  • To further emphasize the partnership the Ports-to-Plains Alliance has and what makes us great
