2013 PIEC Theme: Reduce, Balance and Enhance
Reduce: As natural resources managers in the Pacific region, our main goal is to reduce potential threats to the environment and human health. Reduction comes in many forms including the need to control inputs, manage use, and at times reduce consumption. This can be achived through options like preventing actions, legislation and making efforts to reduce waste streams. Reducing is a key action to ensuring our limited and fragile island resources are sustainable and available to future generations.
Balance: Every sustainable society must strike a balance between growth, social demands and resources. The need for balance is most evident now that our world is struggling with the largest population the planet has ever known. Natural resources are dwindling, and many resources being impacted by secondary alterations like climate change, sea level rise, and more. The need to balance is critical and more evident in our islands as everything is finite and natural resource management is critical to the future of our Pacific Island Societies.
Enhance: Our ultimate goal is to improve the environment and human health of our Pacific Island communities. To achieve this, we must undertake steps to fortify our natural resources and strengthen their resilience in the face of ever-persistent threats. We can achieve this by enhancing our knowledge to make more informed management decisions. This helps us conserve natural resources and gives our communities a chance to continue the life in the Pacific rich with culture and sustained, thriving ecosystems.
