The Student National Medical Association celebrates the 50th Anniversary Annual Medical Education Conference (AMEC) April 16-20, 2014 in Washington, DC. Founded in 1964, at Howard and Meharry Medical Colleges, the SNMA is firmly committed to supporting current and future underrepresented minority medical students, addressing the needs of the underserved community, and to increasing the number of clinically excellent, culturally competent, and social conscious physicians.
The 50th Anniversary AMEC theme, “Fifty Years, One Mission: Diversifying the Face of Medicine”, serves as the programmatic pinnacle of the commitment SNMA to fulfilling this important mission thus far. The conference program aims to provide attendees with a greater appreciation of the history of the SNMA and the ways in which we can continue to fulfill this mission. With workshops focused on academic success, professional development, community empowerment, and research, attendees will be inspired and motivated to become pioneering physicians of tomorrow, translating what they have learned to impact health disparities and diversify the face of medicine. Upon leaving the conference, each attendee will receive a wealth of resources and knowledge that will secure the mission of SNMA, and inspire our nation’s future physicians of color to take SNMA into its next era!

You don’t want to miss this opportunity to kick off the 50th AMEC while serving the DC community. Wednesday also begins our National Advocacy Forum (NAF) and Training. Come out and learn how to advocate for the issues and concerns most important to you! On Thursday, the NAF participants will travel to Capitol Hill to meet with lawmakers and to share our story. The AMEC workshops officially begin on Thursday morning at 9:00 AM and continue throughout each day until the closing banquet on Saturday night. Join us Sunday morning for Easter worship service and our final Board of Directors meeting of the conference.
The conference program is segmented into specialized workshop tracks to meet the needs of our diverse membership body as indicated below. This year special programming has been planned for our many alumni physicians and supporters. Plenary sessions and other presentations are of general interest and are therefore open to all.
Don’t forget about our amazing Exhibit hall! Over 145 Professional and Pre-Medical Exhibitors are coming to AMEC to tell you all about their residency, post-baccalaureate, and medical school programs. The exhibit hall will be a hub of activity, with several exciting events planned including the Exhibit Hall Opening reception, the annual Dr. Wilbert C. Jordan Research Forum, the 2013-2014 Community Service Poster displays, and Interactive demonstrations! Encompassing 30,000 square feet of space, the Exhibits—Professional (medical students and residents) and a Pre-medical Recruitment Fair (for undergraduates and post-baccalaureate students)—will provide a wealth of information and specialized resources, an education in and of itself! Refreshment breaks are scheduled each day of exhibiting.
