Of One Heart and Mind: Common Consent in the Restoration Traditions

Plan to participate in the sixth annual Restoration Studies & Sunstone Midwest Symposium, to be held in Independence, Missouri, at the Graceland University Independence Campus on January 31-February 2, 2014.

We will explore the theme of:  “Of One Heart and Mind: Common Consent in the Restoration Traditions.” Recently Community of Christ has experimented with new ways of conducting the business of World and National Conferences. Historically, how have decisions been made in the various churches descending from the movement led by Joseph Smith, Jr.? How has “common consent” been variously understood and practiced? What are the implications of future trends for the processes of deliberation shaping policies and theologies of authority?

Speaker:  Leonard M. Young

Leonard M. Young served Community of Christ for more than thirty years as a full-time minister. He was a member of the Council of Twelve Apostles from 2000 to 2010.  Recently he has been using his parliamentary knowledge to assist the First Presidency to develop new methods of common consent in the church.  His background includes degrees in social science and education.  He completed his doctorate in education in 1981 from the University of Missouri-Columbia.  Len is a professional registered parliamentarian and a past president of the National Association of Parliamentarians.
