This two-day workshop will provide proven methods for achieving a renovation, retrofit or new construction project that is economical to build and economical to operate.  Sessions will be led by recognized professionals, including school officials, architects and engineers who have successfully designed, built, renovated, operated and maintained high performance school buildings.

Sessions will address the significant impact the built environment has on school budgets and provide methods for achieving an energy efficient, high performance school building.  Participants will:
  1. Learn methods for reducing operational expenses in existing buildings through the implementation of high efficiency retrofits,  recommissioning, energy audits and energy management.
  2. Learn strategies for selecting effective, yet economical materials to achieve significant savings in construction and on-going operational costs.
  3. Dialog with other administrators and design professionals
  4. Learn how the high performance process is applied in a renovation project
  5. Tour a renovation project that led to a 99 ENERGY STAR score in a 56-year-old school building.
  6. Meet with exhibitors presenting technologies that support sustainable operations.
Sessions will address new construction and methods for procuring a high performing school at an economical cost.  Participants will:
  1. Observe documented examples of high performance school buildings and best practices that save districts money over the life of the building.
  2. Learn how a district can develop a culture of sustainability across all departments—from finance to instruction to facilities.
  3. Tour Thomas Nelson High School, the first high school in Kentucky to qualify for ‘Designed to Earn the Energy Star’ and already exceeding performance expectations.
  4. Receive a behind-the-scene examination of a high performance  building’s mechanical and design features
  5. Hear how two school districts incorporated building projects and building components into STEM curriculum
