Course Description and Statement of Need

This in depth educational symposium will explore gender specific issues in prevalence, risk factors, screening modalities, and medical management strategies, including anti-atherosclerotic preventive management, symptom management, adult congential heart disease, arrhythmias including atrial fibrillation, and cardiovascular effects of contraception. The purpose of this conference is to close the knowledge gap of physicians and allied health care professionals regarding sex-specific differences in cardiovascular disease and the impact these differences have on treatment options, and to highlight the importance of identifying women at risk for cardiovascular disease and utilizing the most current evidence-based treatment strategies for improved patient outcomes. 


Target Audience
This educational activity is intended for clinicians who provide cardiovascular care for adult female patients

Educational Objectives       
  • Review gender disparities in academic advancement and promotion.
  • Understand who and how to test for genomic contributors to heart arrhythmias 
  • Understand when to use nutrition, weight management, and bariatric surgery to treat women with and at risk for heart disease.
  • Understand when to refer adult congenital heart disease female patients to a specialty provider.
  • Identify the CVD risks and benefits of newer oral contraceptives.
  • Identify breast cancer survivors who are at an increased CVD risk.
  • Recognize the differences in the prevalence, symptoms and pathophysiology of myocardial ischemia that occurs in women as compared to men.
  • Identify and refer women for appropriate AF ablation and pacemakers.

The California State Board of Registered Nursing accepts courses approved by the ACCME for category 1 credit as meeting the continuing education requirements for license renewal.
