Advanced practice primary care professionals, mental health professionals, and social workers.

Conference Description:

This conference will focus on the psychiatric vulnerability of women in the perinatal period, with particular attention to two key knowledge areas for helping this population: 1) Pregnant women in the postpartum phase who are suffering from a diagnosable mental illness, such as depression, and the potentially damaging effects this may have on the lives of these women; and 2) the capacity of postpartum women experiencing mental illness to engage in the critical task of parenting in a way that supports the psychosocial development of their newborn child. Teaching methods include lectures, discussions, and case study analyses.

Conference Objectives:

Upon completion, you will be better able to:

  • Describe the epidemiology and characteristics of perinatal mental health issues among at-risk people and the corresponding issues that affect women, their infant children, and other family members.
  • Discuss the aspects of neurobiology and epigenetics that underlie perinatal mental health issues that affect women, their infant children, and other family members.
  • Describe evidence-based pharmacological and psychosocial interventions for mothers during pregnancy and lactation, their infant children, and their families from a multicultural perspective.
  • Describe the inter-professional nature of perinatal mental health issues through actual case studies.
