Course Description

The clinical neurosciences are undergoing rapid changes in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders, particularly those concerning surgical treatment options. This course is designed for neurologists, internists, family practitioners, neurosurgeons, pain management and rehabilitation specialist, oncologists and allied healthcare professionals to increased awareness of both established and emerging treatment options for brain and spinal tumors, neuromuscular disorders such as multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, degenerative neurological and spinal disorders, and endovascular and stroke management.
The program will present the treatment options in an interdisciplinary fashion using plenary lectures and case presentations. This symposium will offer participants an opportunity to engage in interactive discussions with renowned faculty who are involved with initiating these neurological advances

Educational Objective

  • Identify the role of stereotactic radiosurgery in treatment of brain metastases and the benefit of improved performance status and local control in patients treated with SRS in addition to WBRT.
  •  List the beneficial effects and risks of thrombolytic therapy in the early management of ischemic stroke, and the indications and limitations of thrombolytic therapy administered 4.5 to 6 hours after stroke onset, in elderly patients, and in strokes with minimal symptoms
  • Utilize thrombolytic therapy in indicated therapeutic window and age groups
  • Identify new indications for endovascular repair of cerebral aneurysms
  • Select patients for endovascular versus surgical treatment of aneurysms based on likely outcomes
  • List the benefits of lumbar spinal fusion when treating degenerative conditions of the lumbar spine
  • Identify patients who are candidates for lumbar spine fusion and laminectomy
  • Identify indications for patient referral to a comprehensive epilepsy center and the role of intracranial electrode implantation in epilepsy patients
  • Refer patients for surgical evaluation of epilepsy based on indications, benefits and limitations of surgical approach
  • State the benefits of minimally invasive spine surgery
  • Review new pain management techniques for spinal disorders
  • Assess when to recommend physiotherapy and anesthesia in selected cases for management of chronic back pain
