Service Animals 101
Two-Session Webinar Series
with speaker

Miranda Levy, MA, CRC
Northwest ADA Center

Date: Tuesday, July 1 and Tuesday, July 8, 2014
Time: 10:00-11:30am
Presenter: Miranda Levy, MA, CRC
Cost: $45 per site per session

Session One

There are several pieces of legislation that cover disability law, not to mention state and local laws—and many of them mention service animals. But each law has different applications. For example, there are different definitions for service animals, and different rules about if or what type of documentation is allowed to be elicited from service animal handlers. So, how can you tell what is a service animal or an emotional support animal? And as a handler, what are your rights and responsibilities?

This 90 minute webinar will discuss several disability laws and their specific regulations regarding service animals, and how state and local service animal law may be different than the federal law. We will also go over guidance with regard to approaching service animals and the reasons for respecting these working animals.

This webinar is meant to be interactive—we know there are a lot of questions out there about service animals. We will be happy to take questions throughout and at the conclusion of the webinar.

Session Two

The Fair Housing Act (FHA) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)  both cover service animals and assistance animals as significant parts of these pieces of legislation. However, while there are similarities between these pieces of legislation, there are also important differences.

For example, there are different definitions for service animals, and different rules about if or what type of documentation is allowed to be elicited from service animal handlers, depending on whether the handler is in a housing situation (covered by the FHA) or in a place covered by the ADA. So, how can you tell what is a service animal or an emotional support animal/"assistance animal?" What are your rights and responsibilities as a handler...and as a housing or business manager?

During this 90 minute webinar, Miranda will apply the ADA law to the topic of service animals and will discuss service animals under the FHA. She will point out comparisons throughout the presentation, and ample time will be left for questions.
