The Conference: October 2-4, 2014

The 2014 WCAAS Asia Studies Conference at ASU opens with a welcome reception on the evening of Thursday, October 2 and continues with more than twenty panels featuring scholarly papers on East, South, and Southeast Asia on the Friday and Saturday. AAS past-president Thongchai Winichakul will deliver the keynote address. Additional events include an annotated screening of Joshua Oppenheimer’s "The Act of Killing," a gala Friday evening light buffet supper and lecture by Professor Leedom Lefferts at Phoenix Art Museum, and a curated tour of the superb Asia collection at Phoenix’s new Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) on Saturday afternoon.  http://mim.org/about/about-mim/


Keynote Speaker

AAS Past-President Thongchai Winichakul

Professor Thongchai Winichakul is a historian of Southeast Asia at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is a specialist in the history of the modern Thai state, an influential public intellectual, the author of Siam MappedA History of the Geo-Body of a Nation, and the winner of the Association for Asian Studies’ Harry J. Benda Prize in 1995.  


“Sacred Stories and Images of the Buddha: the Vessantara Jataka Scroll.” 

Lecture by Leedom Lefferts, professor emeritus Drew University, at Phoenix Art Museum. This talk celebrates the acquisition by the Phoenix Art Museum of a beautiful painted scroll from Northeast Thailand, a rare masterpiece featuring the Vessantara Jataka—the penultimate birth of the karma that in its next life gained enlightenment as the Buddha.
