High Performance Sustainable Schools Workshop: How buildings help districts achieve goals. 
School decision-makers, architects and engineers with plans for new school construction and/or renovation projects are encouraged to attend this two-day workshop.  Attendees will tour two high performance schools, learn strategies from educators and design professionals with documented successes and attend a catered exhibitor reception featuring high performance technologies.  Presentations will offer case studies and methods for both educators and designers that substantiate the financial savings and learner benefits of high performance buildings.   

Sessions will address the significant impact the built environment has on school budgets and provide methods for achieving high performance building design, high efficiency retrofits and an energy management programs.  Participants will:

  1. Learn about innovative strategies being used by architects to achieve economical high performance buildings
  2. Learn about high performance technologies and materials.
  3. Learn how new ASHRAE standards are impacting school design and renovation.
  4. Learn about free curriculum that links the built environment to core content requirements and brings sustainability into the classroom.
  5. Learn methods for reducing operational expenses in existing buildings through the implementation of district-wide energy management. 
  6. Dialog with other administrators and design professionals
  7. Attend a catered reception and meet with exhibitors presenting technologies that support sustainable operations.

Travel by charter bus to a LEED Existing Building school and a new school that both feature demonstrated sustainability

  1. Tour Wilmore Elementary School, scheduled to be the first LEED Existing Building (EB) school in the Commonwealth.  Learn how district savings may be harvested though the implementation of basic energy efficiency practices.
  2. Tour Red Oak Elementary, a school designed for ENERGY STAR.  Participate in a behind-the-scene examination of a high performance building’s mechanical and design features.  Learn how sub-metering and smart metering can profit a district.
  3.  Travel by luxury coach and enjoy a buffet lunch at Asbury College between school tours.
