Bill Mallard Lay Theology Institute: Holy Conferencing: From Wesley to 2016
Candler’s 2016 Mallard Lay Theology Institute will focus on the origins, history, and current issues facing the upcoming General Conference of The United Methodist Church, to be held in Portland, Oregon, in May. The all-day session will be held on Saturday, April 9 at Northside Church, and will feature four of Candler’s Methodist Studies faculty. Lunch is included in the registration cost of $35 ($25 for students). Northside Church is located at 2799 Northside Dr. NW, Atlanta, GA 30305.

The program will showcase four of Candler’s Methodist Studies faculty:

The Rev. Dr. Kevin Watson
, Assistant Professor of Wesleyan and Methodist Studies, will focus on Wesley’s understanding of conferencing as a means of grace and its impact on the development of the classes and bands in early Methodism. He will speak to the value of a recovery of Wesley’s original understanding of the term for us today.

Dr. Rex Matthews, Professor in the Practice of Historical Theology and Wesleyan Studies, will tell the story of the emergence and function of the “Conference” beginning in 1744 within British Methodism and its evolution once the activity becomes a staple of the early Methodist Episcopal Church (MEC) in the US, leading up to the 1844 General Conference that divided the church into the MEC and Methodist Episcopal Church, South.

The Rev. Dr. Tom Elliott, Assistant Professor in the Practice of Practical Theology,  will speak to the long phase of the formation of the General Conference and its role in evolving issues of the last century.

The program will end with a presentation by Dr. Anne Burkholder, Associate Dean of Methodist Studies, who will discuss current day issues facing the 2016 General Conference.
