Every nurse is a leader, no matter the position or work setting. Nurses need to articulate professional issues, negotiate patient care, support and coach one another and implement changes in practice. Leadership skills are essential in the changing healthcare environment and nurses with strong leadership skills are the professionals who make a difference
Healthcare is constantly changing and evolving which creates both challenges and opportunities for nurses and other healthcare professionals. Financial pressures, health care reform, quality and safety issues, technological advances, a changing workforce and care delivery settings are all part of today’s landscape. This creates opportunities for nurses to have a greater voice in advocating for patients, healthcare organizations, the nursing profession and themselves.
The 2016 Taking the Lead Conference will explore the concept of advocacy and leadership. Participants will learn from a noted healthcare leader and nurse about how to”play to win”. Other presenters will explore how nurses can influence decisions in healthcare organizations and the importance of advocacy in shaping health policy. We invite you to join colleagues in learning and sharing ideas about shaping a preferred future for nursing and for healthcare.

  • Explore the concept of advocacy and the advocacy skills nurses need to thrive in today’s healthcare environment.
  • Identify strategies that can be learned and used by nurses to enhance patient care and positively impact the nursing profession.
  • Describe the value of strong nursing leadership in shaping a preferred future for healthcare nursing.

This conference is designed for nurses who work in any setting.  Whether functioning at the highest levels of administration, working closely with your patient population, providing essential knowledge and skills to students, or developing critical evidence for our profession, you will take away information and leadership strategies that will significantly benefit your practice.

This Program is jointly provided by Beaumont-Oakwood, The Institute for Professional Nursing (IPN) and the University of Michigan Health System (UMHS).
