Curriculum Overview

The workshop will cover:
•    social and cognitive issues that may influence students’ writing development
•    how to approach pedagogy for novice writers from crafting assignments, providing feedback, improving grammar, and scoring assessments.
•    The focus of the institute will help you integrate writing into existing curricula and promote scoring practices that will not increase the workload. Integration of the Common Core State Standards in ELA, Social Studies, and Science will also be covered.

Coursework will include:

  • Examining novice writers in secondary classrooms
  • Novice students’ constructs of “good writing”
  • Varied writing opportunities
  • Critical reading for depth and complexity
  • Rhetoric and the writer’s choice
  • Argument in the disciplines
  • Integrating disciplinary theory to engage and develop novice writers
