This year's regional conference will be at Camp Stewart, a 500 acre summer camp situated on the North Fork Guadalupe River in Hunt, TX.

We are honored and excited to invite all SPE members to experience the unique beauty and inspiration of the Texas Hill Country - a place rich in art, music & culture, with a dash of Texas Bravado.

Headliner Events

Curator and Latino art scholar Claudia Elisa Zapata, editor and publisher of ChingoZine
Poet and Photographer Joshua Edwards, author of Architecture for Travelers and Photographs Taken at One-Hour Intervals During a Walk from Galveston Island to the West Texas Town of Marfa
"Psychedelic Modern Classical Ensemble" Montopolis, performing their recently debuted musical/photographic/spoken word work Monolith
Honored Educator Tim Tracz, Professor of Art at Austin College in Sherman, TX

This regional conference offers the type of programming you expect and love, as well as additional events and experiences. There will be two full days of lectures, workshops, demonstrations and portfolio reviews from regional SPE members, as well as keynote presentations in poetry, performance and the written word. Unique to this conference will be outdoor cookouts, a gourmet catered meal, ongoing exhibitions, outdoor activities and a Yurt Obscura!

Camp Stewart is located near the small town of Hunt, TX, about 15 miles from Kerrville, 116 miles from Austin, and 80 miles from San Antonio.

Only current SPE members may register. Be sure to buy or renew your SPE membership here before you register. Non-members will have their registration cancelled. Advanced Registration Only! No on-site registration.

Special Events and Activities

Kindness and Community Ongoing Photo Show- On-site printers, paper, and portable walls, for a crowd-sourced exhibition that will change and evolve as the retreat progresses. Sponsored by Red River Paper, Hannemühle, Propanels and KIND Snack Bars.
Hammock Pavilion- Overlooking the North Fork Guadalupe River. Relax, sway slowly in the breeze, sit a spell, and cleanse your mind for creative rejuvenation. Sponsored by Eagle’s Nest Outfitters.
Yurt Obscura- A 150 sq. ft. circular temporary “tent” made of foam insulation panels and duct tape, with a lens mounted in one wall! Experience the optical thrill known since ancient days. Courtesy of SPE Member Rachel Rushing.
Portfolio Reviews- with a twist! Instead of the 20-minute timed format, reviewers and reviewees will be scheduled for 50 minute "walk-through" sessions.  This allows the flexibility for longer (or shorter) reviews, as feels right.  More details in the Portfolio Reviews tab.
Friday Morning Hike by the River- Enjoy an invigorating stroll through the Hill Country landscape.
Friday Afternoon Yoga- Led by Colette Copeland, SPE member and Certified Yoga Instructor. Bring your own mat!
FREE TIME! Friday and Saturday 3:00-6:00 will be a free time for swimming, canoeing, archery (for a $35 fee), or one of several plein air informal demonstrations. Processes that will be demonstrated are Carbon Transfer by Kent Rush and Neal Cox, Wet Collodion by Scott Hilton, and Screen Printing by Kelly Flynn (of Hen Laying Egg). Or, take an afternoon nap! (Refer to “Hammock Pavilion” above.)
