Dear Fellow Chairs,
I am delighted to invite you to attend the 2017 AMSPC Annual Meeting, which will be held in Oaxaca Mexico, from January 26-30, 2017. Oaxaca is one of Mexico’s most captivating cities, pairing lively festivals and entertainment with fantastic cuisine and unique cultural attractions. Oaxaca is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that features outstanding museums and art studios, fascinating markets, a vibrant café culture and its own superb version of Mexican cuisine which we will amply sample.
The meeting will be held at the Hotel Quinta Real, built in 1576 as the Convent of Santa Catalina de Siena that has been converted to a romantic luxury hotel while retaining much of the original structure. The hotel is located in historic city center with outstanding city views and sits one block from the Santo Domingo Cultural Center and the best galleries, museums, and handicraft stores the city has to offer. Xoxocotlán International Airport (OAX) can be reached by a short 30-minute flight from Mexico City.
We are in the process of finalizing the program, which will include an exciting mix of formal presentations and panel discussions on diverse topics of scientific and educational interest to the AMSPC community. Many of the focus areas being planned were identified during the Costa Rica meeting. We will continue to explore the impact of reproducibility of scientific research and the federal regulatory burden on academic research, the development of educational tools for the discipline and, of course, presentations by new chairs. We hope to also discuss the future sustainability of biomedical research in light of the outcome of the national election.
Of course we will also have numerous opportunities to interact during our leisure time. We will spend one afternoon exploring the Monte Albán archeological site, a short drive from Oaxaca in a spectacular mountaintop setting. Sheilah Jewart, our long-time meeting organizer is also developing a series of activities for you and/or your guest(s) to participate in off-hours including a hiking tour of the inspiring rock formations at the petrified waterfall, Hierve el Aqua, tours of local villages to see local artisans at work, and a Mezcale tasting event. I hope you and your guests will join us, and if you can come a day early, we are planning which is not to be missed!
This meeting provides an invaluable forum to network and discuss how best to address the challenges facing each of us as Chairs and Investigators, and I look forward to your participation and suggestions for additional topics to be discussed.
Please mark your calendars now and plan to attend (Jan 26-30) and see you in Oaxaca!
